I was wondering how many people still have the skills to weave a basket like that? Well,there was at least one,wasn't there? I suppose there are some out there still weaving the baskets for hot air balloons.

 

Mike thanks for the kind words and clarifications, in all honesty, I found this thread thru another thread on locostusa, so, serendipity? Funny thing is I sort of come from hot rods - Beforethe BMW Dixi idea, I'd wanted to build a T-bucket (if going by the many 1/25 scale hot rods I built as a kid was any kind of indication).

BTW, this is the car I mentioned in my previous post, the BMW Dixi. about the size of an Austin 7, or American bantam. I actually sat in a Bantam at the National Antique Car Association museum in hershey PA last may.

 

In fact the BMW Dixi is an Austin 7, built under licence. The design began to diverge from Austin's almost from the start, though, growing transverse-leaf IFS after a very few years.

Try organizations that do vocational training for the blind. I had such a society weave a very odd-shaped waste-paper basket that fits under the dash of my Golf Mk1.

I have been told that the BMW dixi engine was a mirror image of the Austin 7 one to make it suitable for left hand drive ,,,, I have always fancied making a v8 with a dixi block and an Austin 7 block ,,, would be fun to squeeze it into my Austin 7 ulster ,,

have spent a couple of fruitfull days in the workshop with the Jappic recreation
it now has a deadline to be running as the festival of slowth has been announced
this is in mid may ok who needs a new kidney I need to raise some money to buy a set of wheels for the car its going to be tight

 

Ade, the American Bantam was a mirrored 7 also--at least the first ones. Later the crank had plain bearing mains, still later 3 mains.

Speaking of Dixi's and Austins, I have a pile of parts left over from my project that I'm looking to sell. I have a complete Austin of England 10-4 motor w/transmission and complete 10-4 roadster body with glass dash, convertible top frame, etc.

Aside from Ebay, where else would one market parts?

Ade,quit teasing us with that stuff.I don't think here in the states anyone sold individual items to the public to make their own vehicles.Then to think there was a day when a Brit could go pick out parts and assemble a vehicle without going to the breakers is a pretty cool thought.The other thought is that there probably few if any GNs Frazer-Nash's that made here for any of us to build specials out of.

 

There has to be a plus side to living in the Uk
