I'm trying to figure out what hinges would work best. I have two differnt brands of hinges at the shop and neither seem like they will work out that well. The jams on a 64 impala are shaped all crazy. they are real deep and have lots of contures and the top of the jam is alot wider than the bottom. I know I need the hinge as close to the out side of the quarter pannel so the door clears. but on the door side I also need to have a very shallow pocket so the gl*** clears the hinge pocket.I have installed hinges in outher cars and not had so mutch trouble. I think I will have to bend the arms of the hinges so they will work. But If any body has all ready figured the best way out let me know thanks. Scott I know. Why would you want to suicide the doors on a 64 Impala? Because I'm getting payed to is the only answer I could come up with.
Never done it, but here's an idea I had that may or may not work. What about the hinges off older, Bulbous 50's fullsize GM's like the Buicks and Caddys. Those doors had some crazy coutours to them, and to get the doors to swing clear, the hinges come way out. I'll snap some pics of the 55 Buick's hinges tomorrow or you're more than welcome to stop by and check it out in person. I'm gonna be working on it's wiring tomorrow. PM me. Other than that all I can think of is swap the grille and tail panel end for end, then hack off the roof and weld it on backwards. Voila! (Maybe he won't notice)
donno bout the B post troubles as i am not real sure what the car really looks like in there, HOWEVER,,, have you thought about using a set of off the shelf sewerslide hinges and bending them at 90deg so that the door side hinge pocket ends up on the rear face of the door itself? i know this would limit the amount of adjustment you would have to play with later for fine tuning, but hell if its done right, you dont need to adjust them much. attaching the hinges like that would def solve your gl*** clearance woes, and shouldnt be all that much extra work. only need to put some extra reiforcement on the inside of the rear of the door. Good luck BCG... you'll do aight, i seen some of your work bro
I Did My 64 Galaxie And Used The Stock Hinge. Its Alot O Work Though. My Hinges Set Really Close To The Quarter Skin. The Galaxie Has Some Really Deep And Odd Concaves In This Area Too.**** It Can Be Done
I have a set of hagan hinges and a set of speedway hinges. I have been looking at the stock hinges . I don't know. I sure once I start cutting I will figure it out . I was just wondering if any body has done one before so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. Thanks Scott
