chevy s10 t5 transmission will not go into the ford flathead motor...does the motor have to come out..cant seem to get the right angle from the top or the bottom the the truck...any help would be appreciated
Not sure what you are doing here but we used a T5 with our flathead. We used the readily available adapter (from Nostalgia Sids) between the ****** and the bell housing, stock pressure plate and Astro van disc to mate up with the ******. Had to machine out the center depression in the flywheel about 1/2" to clear the rivets on the center area of the disc. We did ours in the frame before the body was dropped on so it was way easier... I would think you could do this without removing the engine but probably have to make a removable rear ****** mount/cross member? We had to build a removable cross member for ours... Plenty good info on here about this very swap.... Ya got pics??
You must use the proper adapter for your engine, and search here for lots of info on t-5 installs-goes back years.
sorry guys ya i have all that but there are two brackets on the frame that are in the way....5 speed s10 going in....seems that i need about two more inches for it to drop in but like i said there are brackets in the way,,,riveted to the frame,,,about 20 inches forward from the narrow part of the frame...
Hmm, maybe he's talking about the stock trans mount (or what's left of it) about 2" ahead not 20". Yes photos always help. The Wizzard
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ truck, this gentleman knows what he's talking about(not that others don't). if he needs pics ,by all means get him pics. like to see it myself tho
2 original transmission mounts are about a foot from centre of x member, I have not yet removed them as drivers side mount is used to attach pedal return spring, the 4 x member transmission boxing plates have had rivets and plates removed, do you know if engine can be shifted forward by loosening motor, need about 2" will attempt to send pictures my s10 t5 has the speedway chevy to flathead adaptor, all fit together which uses early ford release shaft, fork and throw-out bearing.
Before you move the motor forward 2" you better check Fan to Rad spacing. I don't think you have an extra 2" in factory spacing. The Wizzard
the original fan blade set up has been removed when converted to 12 volt, now using electric fan behind radiator, I am considering removing the seat base which is not allowing me to just set the ****** in, the plates in the x have been drilled out ,the gas pedal creates some angle problems and maybe the old transmission mounts should be removed but the measurements say it will fit... truckrick aka busted knuckles
I personally have not done this change myself however I know these Trucks pretty well. First question is, do you want to remove the seat riser? If not maybe a 36 grill will give you enough room to move things forward. Also I seem to remember a long time ago working on a V-W (yes I said that) they had a system to relocate the shifter for sand rails when reversing the motor to front mount. It was a pretty kool piece. Don't know what it would take to adapt that to the T-5 shifter but that shifter system is the same style you are working with. With that style unit you can put the shift handle anywhere you want. The Wizzard
Back again, Yes the two small tabs can be removed for more clearance but I do not think that you will have enough room to remove the trans thru the top if that is your intention. There is not enough room in the floor opening of the cab with out cutting it all up and the seat will be in the way also. Remeber you still need to box the top of the x member to improve the rigidity of the frame.
yes I have the plate kit for strengthening the frame, also with the kit comes a lower plate for the wishbones to be reinstalled. I had a transmission business take a look they agree just remove old transmission frame tabs by drilling out rivets, they said last resort would be to separated tail section of the chev. s10 t5 which gives better shifter location as you can see by pictures kits can be purchased thru speedway motors, ch***is engineering and hot rod works. when the tabs are removed I'll just need a bracket to mount return pedal spring I'll let you know how it all worked out thanks
