I dunno, my namesake 327 was pretty satsifying to drive with 2.73s, although it definitely got better with 3.42s! I'm sure it would be very peppy with 2.02 heads and 4.11s, but that would pretty much limit me to in town and back roads unless I wanted to buzz the teeth out of my head all the time.

Personally, I like a little more bottom end rather than max RPM potential, but it depends on how you drive and what you're used to. I was born into a world quickly filled with .70 overdrives and 2.41 rear axles, so I'm not a big RPM lover.

Depends largely on tire size, too. With 29" tall tires a 4.11 gear is not too bad at all for moderate stretches at highway speeds. The same gear with a 26" tall tire would pretty much be unbearable on the highway, unless you hated the car and wanted to punish it or something...lol!

Best improvement you can do to your Ford or any Ford is give it a Heartbeat and see America in your Chevy Powered Ford. Otherwise, with the Ford motor, you will spend most of your time trying to make it run right.

Well, by comparing him to a hetero***ual, you just made the ***umption that he has been involved in some sort of ***ual behavior other than rubbing on his red 1984 Camaro model with a fake Dale Earnhardt signature.

But for the record, although I've always been sort of a "Ford Guy",the last 3 engines I built were a 350hp 302 Ford,a 350hp 402ci big block Chevy, and the current bored & stroked 427ci early Hemi project for the Model A,so I'm not really too biased....

The Boss 302 is going in car with toploader 4 speed! Now just need to figure out intake setup. Hunting for weber manifold, not sure if I will be able to find one. Maybe 6-71 blower or just single carb doing my research what will be best.

Webers sure would look impressive on that thing....A blower would really take advantage of those killer heads too.A tunnel ram would rock the hell outta that old Ford of yours too......I can't wait to see what you scrounge up for it.Have you tried John Vermeersch at Total Performance in Mount Clemens Michigan?I'm pretty sure if anybody on the planet would have a Boss blower manifold he would....or Maybe Rick Kirk out in Ripley Oklahoma....?

Sorry, its difficult to understand what your saying because your words are incomplete and sentences jumping around every where. And I think it is dumb you would want to put a SBC in something other than a chevy in the first place, so many better motors to choose from. I guess when one is limited by their knowledge of automobiles...

Joel, Limited knowledge is the driving force behind many 350 Chevy builds.

I hope this thread doesn't derail. The Boss 302 is one of my all time favorite Ford engines. Tradition be damned, if all out grunt from root to toot in the lightest possible package were the goal, it's an awesome choice. Removing the glam aspect, a big Holley jetted for cruising and then WFO would make it run the best. I picture the car going sort of "Eastwood/Barakat" in overall vibe, and solid enough to handle the power would be a monster 1/4 mile screamer yet very drivable with decent road manners.

With regard to other engines, I guess you had to "be there" before the Ford in a Ford thing became the gospel of parrots vs all-in hotrodders. Dad always built "Fordillacs" and had really fast pickups, most Cad powered.

  14. Took the missus to give birth to our little on in a pane jane '68 Mustang with w genuine boss 302. The car had awful street manners and didn't run prior to 4K but from 4K to oh wow it was a screamer. We loved that little Ford.

Here is the deal and no one is probably going to get it, a small ford with 4V heads has to be run in the upper RPM range. Tall gears and lugging do not apply period. If you are not a died in the wool hot rodder none of the small block big headed Fords are your car. They are made to be driven and driven hard.

    Highlander,
That ford in a ford or MOPAR in a MOPAR is a restorer's mantra friend. Pure and simple. You and I both know and understand that, you probably better then I because while you are a rodder at heart you have the patience and dedication to actually restore a cl***ic. Something that I have done and hated every bit of it and you have done and made it look simple.

Pork, you just made my day.....not only a cool story about a cool old ride you used to flog the snot out of,but the old Mustang played an important role in the growth of your family....That's something that you can't buy.Too cool.:)

Thank you for the compliment my friend. I do refer to the "Ford in a Ford" thing as more a marketing plan or simply misinformed babble. I place it in the old "...Sportster's a girls bike..." mantra from the equally misinformed parrot. Perhaps today's little 883 "Hugger" is more suitable to the fairer ***, but decades ago I'd have challenged anyone to consider mine for girls. Well, MOST girls anyways:eek:

We see it here all the time. Guy drops a SBC all decked out in period dress between the rails of an A or a Deuce, to many he's a pariah. Blasphemous dolt of traditional hot rodding. Yet when there's a Nailhead, vintage Olds, multi-carbed Caddy, or the holiest of holys, an early Hemi, many of those same folk will line up to nearly blow the guy for his choice of "real" vintage HP. Just a personal peeve of mine, and clearly a snapshot of human nature, latching onto something that seems to make sense, and allowing it to displace reality or history.

Yet on topic, using the OP's engine choice in an early drag themed build would be awesome. The motor choice picks the trans, the drivetrain picks the wheels and suspension, etc, etc. Use that engine with 16" steelies and 48 Ford hub caps, nope. Early aluminum slots and big belted 60s and 70s, yup. Diamond tufted seats, candy or flake paint, a rear push bar...

    Just sayin...

Well Im going to look at acouple Cross Boss intake setup ups this morning! I agree Highlander but I'm thinking two sets of rims/tires. Run my 16" steelies with hood & sides, then I can swap on Early slot wheels pull hood off & have a whole different look. Kinda 2 cars in one is my thought.

I'd keep it all ford if it was mine. A real small block Boss sure would draw a lot of attention. It's your preference, but it's very common to find a sbc in street rods. Do something different.

Its getting a built 1970 Boss 302 with toploader 4speed trans. Full hood with sides so can't see whats really in it. I grew up in the late 80s early 90s at a Ford perf shop so its getting the looks of traditional Hot Rod with Drivetrain of my past loves. Best of both Worlds.
