It's ludicrous to think that wagon is worth $15K. There are so many negatives in terms of monetary value I can't even begin to list them all. Here are a few of the biggies:

    Buick
    Wagon
    Grungy old engine
    Dis***embled

$3K would be a generous gift to your Grandmother.

As for all 'there's way more in it than that' approach, well so what? Old cars are not exactly the S&P 500 now are they?

You've gotten some good advice here IMO. Taking care of grandma to the tune of $2500-$5000 sounds reasonable to me. Done & finished, $8000-$10000 also sounds about right. You're not likely to sell it anyhow, so that part really doesn't come into play.

What I don't get is where these guys are seeing $15-$18000 for a nice '64 Buick wagon. A lot people have lost their *** putting mega-buck restoration money in a not as desirable as they thought car. Reality bites sometimes.

Good luck with it, it's a cool wagon, and it was Grandpa's. Put it together, cruise it, & enjoy.

My granddad way back when had a '54 Dodge Coronet 4 dr and a '46 Dodge pickup (both bought new). Neither was very desirable 40 years ago. I was offered the '54 for free, six-cylinder and 3 speed manual. My dad had floors put in it and the seats redone. It was not "cool" and I declined. I could buy one now, but it wouldn't be the same one.

What makes this wagon valuable to YOU is the history behind it. Get it, keep it, and make it part of your family's history. It is way cool and you will get lots of enjoyment out of it.

This is right about where my numbers are as well, (I said $5k now and $10k finished) and they seem like the middle ground between the low ballers and the dreamers.

I want to make it clear I am not saying the car is a bad car. It's just like a lot of old cars - cool but worth little.

The one Arkiehotrods posted above is a great comparison point. It has amateur paint and the chrome was not redone, but it is fully ***embled, running and driving, and has nice period looking wheels and tires on it, for $5500.

And after 3 months, it was STILL for sale and that's on a Station Wagon Forum. There's no denying that SOME wagons can be made cool. But in the BIG picture, it's a model with limited appeal and definitely NOT the usual first choice for a ride.

When I was a teenager, I wanted one. Going fast cost money, so a wagon tricked out and loaded with my buddies seemed cool. It was a phase. I admire guys that can trick out the oddball ride. It shows dedication, but all the POTENTIAL cool can't come into price negotiations.

The OP could offer the $3,000 and let his grandma know it's still in the family. Hell, it he chills out long enough, she'll probably GIVE it to him.

That's what I was getting at earlier. Put it together and get it running and sorta out. Enjoy it with your grandma and show her how find you are of it. You said you are in school so focus on school, tell grandma the car means a lot to you and you would like to be first in line when she is done sorting through all the pieces of your grandfathers life. Give her time and take some time yourself to step away once it's finished. I'm sure you and grandma will hash out a deal you both like later, but now while it's in pieces and you and grandma both have a lot on your plates isn't the time to e overly concerned about it.

first of all it is not a restored car ,it has new floors and a paint job .this fellow helped with the work and is going to put it back together and he loves the car . if his grandmother asks for more than 5000 grand I would be greatly surprised .

  17. That purple 64 buick wagon was mine I bought from main and had it shipped it back here to east T.N. I painted it in my garage.it was to be plum blue but looked more like getto purple.I never forgave the guy that mixed the paint.LOL.Bruce.

  18. I did the back of the wagon in the leave it to Beaver theme. Old picnic basket, a old blanket, ice chest, first aid kit and other old things. At Christmas time I would fill the back of the wagon with wrapped Christmas presents. People loved it. Every time I got gas or food shopping people would stop and ask me about it. I traded it for a 1956 Chrysler Windsor from a friendly H.A.M.B.E.R. here. He then sold it on here .I had the chrysler for about 4 years then sold it and bought that 1956 money pit 1956 buick station wagon. lol I am the one who always asks for help on it here .lol Good luck on getting your grandfathers station wagon.1 thing check the frame over the rear wheels for rot, that's their weak spot. Bruce.

Glad to see that we're right in that $1k-$100k range and have been able to help you out. Personally, if I was picking that up as a quasi-finished project that still needs work, I would be hard-pressed to go over $5k. Looks like a great car and I hope it all works out for you.
