We have installed a T-5 transmission to our 40 Ford motor. Bought an adapter and used 38 Ford truck bell housing so the original pedals could be used. Bought the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing from speedway. If we adjust the clutch for little free play we can't shift gears and no free play to where we can shift and it rides on the bearing and the clutch slips under power. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this guy. Hate to start all over again. 29 Bob
Am experiencing the same problem with my 4 speed top loader behind my 8BA and am wondering if the clutch adjustment rod is now too short to get correct adjustment as pressure plate doesn't seem to disengage completely with pedal in. Anxious to see an answer to this problem.
Is the disc in the correct way? There also two lengths of throw out bearing carrier. Did you cut the T-5 input shaft where it goes into the pilot bearing. Did you put a Chevy pilot bushing or bearing in? Just random thoughts, good luck.
Talked to Tech at Speedway and they said we are using all of the right parts so it must be an adjustment problem in the clutch pedal arm. Not sure how were going to modify that yet. Will advise.
The question is what you are using as the clutch throw out arm on bell housing. Are you using the Speedway adapter or Cornhusker version or the Bond version plate. By saying you are using a truck style hogs head I also ***ume that you are using the throw arm from that set up and a flat plate style adapter. First issues is that the clutch throw arm on the 38 trans head will not marry to the 40 p***enger car pedal set up as the relationship throws are in different planes. To use this setup in a 40 you need to change the 38 truck style lever throw clutch shaft to the ****erly jackshaft style similar to the stock style unit you removed from the 40. If your pedal throw rod is angeled over to meet the trans throw arm you are not pushing straight in the shaft but at an angle that does not produce enough forward motion to the clutch arm. To contine to investigate this issue you need to name all the parts you used in the clutch pedal to trans adapter and this can be a little easier to diagnose.
Problem I had was the spring pack on the disc was just rubbing on the edge of the flywheel. Used a die grinder to remove about an 1/8" from the center. Fixed the problem. Can't remember what disc I used, but I did have free play in the pedal so I ***umed the pressure plate was down as far as it go. Actually it worked fine on flat ground. but I noticed it in the hills. at first I thought I might have oil on the disc but then found the problem. My amateur artwork might help explain what I did.
