  9. thank you all so much

I went to see Bob Joehnck today. He said he already got some calls that his old car was found and was expecting to see me. He is a legend and a true cl*** act.

The man has tuned everything and Jesse Alexander just wrote a big article about him with photos of his cars. He told me why the club was called the "whistlers". Turns out, when a 32 grille is moving over 125mph it sounds just like a whistle..... how would I know that?
Anyway, he got the coupe down to #2 overall standings and ran the So-Cal coupe (yes, the real one) out of Ventura before Alex bought it. He said my coupe always felt solid at high speeds. The rules would not allow them to chop it but in 1955-7 the rules changed (or so he thought because after that it got chopped four inches).
After that, he raced big money Corvettes and broke records every time he ran out there.

What does he think about me building it again? "my Nova does 9's, bring your **** box coupe down here and I will smoke you up and down the street."

as I left, he said, "when you get that coupe done I will put a whistlers club plaque on it."

Right now my coupe is at Rudy Rodriguez' shop and is going to be built by a man born to do it. Like I told rickyracer this week, I dont plan on cutting any corners with this car. Rudy has more respect for this car's history than anyone, and swears not to paint any Mexican *****s on the doors!

Thanks again for all your help.

Mr. Gooch - It's obvious that the car is in good hands. Keep us posted on it's progress, and don't forget us little guys when you go to Pebble Beach [IMG]
Bob Joehnck is indeed a legend.

Unreal. I want a ride my next trip to SoCal. Or at least have some quiet time with the car.

This is the best. This makes quiet guys like me stand up and say YES. This is the kind of stuff that got me hooked on the right cars. I love this. I can't wait to see progress pics. Now, I know what I'll be thinking of tonight to help me get to sleep...

AND, thank God you bought the car and are able to "save" it. It could have ended up looking like some belly****on gl*** car loaded with billet and big wheels. The '34 was a worthy sacrifice for this car.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the pictures that Lowlife posted from the Don Montgomery book and from The Rodders Journal are different angles of the same grudge race. Weird.

Awesome stuff here....the car sure was a looker in its day, and as fast as it was attractive. So which era are you looking to recreate with it? Before or after the chop?

  22. well, the top chop on it now is like the chop it had for the 56-62 seasons. It was chopped 4 inches and painted ice blue. I like the chop it has now and we are going to leave it alone. The car came with the radical chop roof whick is going to be used to fix Rudy's new 32.
The original color was bronze when it wasn't chopped. After they chopped it they made a cardboard roof they would tape on so they could run in both cl***es. I wish my scanner worked..... [IMG] The pictures are great.

thanks to everyone that sent me photos via e-mail and for Roadsters.com for getting me in touch with Jack Underwood. Jack Chard (prievious owner of my coupe as well as the Pierson Bros. 34) has made it his personal mission to try and get all the trophies and plaques back for me.

    Thank you all again.

  24. Elmo, Bob Joehnck is the real deal. Anyone who is anyone knows and respects him. He owned Bonneville.

Funny, he was totally unimpressed with me building one of his old cars.... he just said he would still kick my ***. 80 years old and drives a 9 second Nova. Total hero!

    That man's more than a ruler. He's a hundred-foot tape measure.

    Thanks for the btt Zodoff.

I can only imagine the feeling of owning a relic, and the trills that come with the hunt for information.
Some HAMB posts certanly beats others. [IMG]
Good luck Gooch, a truly cool car.
