Rubberized undercoat - Cheapest way to buy it for big job?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fordor Ron, Jan 14, 2014.

  1. I am going to coat the bottom side of the body on my latest project with rubberized undercoat. It's a big job and may take as many as 10 - 15 cans. So...

Is there a place like Harbor Frieght that sells it cheap or can you buy it in a quart somewhere and spray it out of a gun?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. You might be better off using something like a sprayable truck box liner. Would be cheaper and more durable. There are lots of different kits available with varying degrees of hardness to the coating some being more rubbery than others.

  3. That's actually not a bad idea. I may look into that if the undercoat thing is too expensive.

  4. Bed liner is going to be more expensive, but worth it. You can get undercoat in quarts and apply either with a shoots gun.

  5. If you want to go cheap, I've used Black Jack blacktop crack filler and sealer. It stood up very well!

Do you have to worry about the heat from the exhaust, if you use bed liner. I like this idea, I am trying to make my cab as quiet as possible.

  7. I found the Rustoleum undercoat is available in a quart jar. I think this is the route I'm gonna go.

  8. Amazon.com is about the cheapest place to get undercoating, certain brands have free shipping too.
I have used bed liner in the past, but it is messy and you have to mask off everything really well.

I just did the underside of my coupe with herculiner and am very happy with the results I spent 70.00 for the kit which comes with a gallon of herculiner. I put on 2 good coats and still have a half gallon left

  10. I noticed that TSC sells gallon cans of bedliner in their paint section. I didn't notice the price or brand - sorry.

I was thinking the same thing. I just used it around my stove pipe and it looked about the same as undercoating.

We've been using "Raptor" brand of catalized bedliner as a undercoating. Real happy with it. It does dry hard unlike rubberized undercoat that stays, well, rubbery. I like the hard finish better myself, when it gets dirty a little pressure wash and it looks like new, that doesn't happen with tradtional undercoats.
Runs around $100 for a gallon kit online, little more at our local jobbers. I did the whole floor and rear wheel wells on a 39 Ford Tudor last week with 1 quart so it's not bad price wise.

they sell in quarts and gallons in the paint store. takes a special gun to spray. new stuff is durable like bedliner but also plyable for rocks and vibration. salt and moisture is one thing other is dirt sticking to it.

please don't put roofing tar under your car. :(

As many have said, spray on bedliner would be a good bet. I've found it works real well for that. Not so well for actually lining a truck bed however...-dd

the rubber undercoat holds moisture and forces the rust and like said above doesn't wash up

  16. Sobto be safe rubberized undercoat shouldn't be used? Just use bedliner instead?

Lowe's sells a variety of roof sealers one of them should work. Someone needs to take the time to read the labels.

    Good idea chopped.
Years ago I used a product called Wesley's. I got it at a home improvement store and believe it was a roofing product. It worked great as a sound deadener and even helped with rigidity on a large door panel. I applied it with a brush.
You can also get bed liner in gallon containers. Herculiner has a kit they sell with the roller, brush and abrasive pad. Says it covers 60 square feet. I have also been satisfied using this product. For touch up or hard to reach areas I use the spray can. The product is also good inside fiberglass or steel fenders of the early cars. It helps prevent the little star chips from stones and debris hitting the underside of the fender. This product is paintable so if it starts looking messy over time, I clean the area and give it a light coat of Rustoleum satin black.

Here's what RAPTOR looks like when it's first applied...it's ten times better than rubberized undercoating and dirt washes off it easily. A kit will run you about $100 but you get three bottles of the stuff, plus the catalyst...and that's enuff to do the entire undercarriage of any car...I've used this stuff twice now, first on my '55 Cadillac, then on the '60 Chevy wagon I'm building...much better than bedliner...

  20. That looks great! Is it rough like a spray bedliner?

When I was stripping the fenders on my 58 GMC the blackjack like tar they used back then to quiet them was far and away the most difficult stuff to remove... but damn there wasn't a lick of rust to be found. Virgin looking metal.
I'd say that shit works better than anything.

Doesn't mean I'm going to use it though.

    Another vote for U-Pol Raptor.

A little over one of the three containers did the underside of my A coupe. Also did the fiberglass firewall liner so if passengers put their feet on it it won't be marked.

The rest is being saved till spring to do the underside of the fenders, running boards and splash aprons. Should prevent any starring from stones.

While I think Raptor liner works great I'll throw this out there for you guys. I worked in a production shop once where the owner would take his scrap/waste thinner and mix it with cheap roofing tar from the local Home D. and give each customer a complimentary undercoat job with every repair! MAN that shit was STICKY and NASTY but I'll bet NO rust could live under that stuff! Funny part was Customer loved it and thank him!
