That modification is similar to how a mechanical speedo is added to a T-56. it will work fine... but if you need the mechanical speedo drive gear for the T-5 then finding that will be another difficult task. Doing the electonic conversion might be wise.

HenryJ, I would not be afraid to use that housing. When you swap an S10 mech speedo tail housing onto an electric speedo trans, you also have to do one of two things; either replace the output shaft with one from a mech speedo trans, or, create a mounting boss on your existing output shaft for the speedo drive gear, which involes some combination of shim stock and epoxy. All of this is because the mech speedo drive is further rearward on the tailshaft.

The folks that converted the housing that you bought are, I believe, trying to simplify the process so that you can change the housing and keep your existing output shaft with the drive gear installed on the existing boss.

    Henry,
I can see your desire to use a mechanical speedo, I like older mechanical speedos with trip odometer. The new electric gauges with digital numbers are not traditional enough for me. I converted my elec speedo S-10 tail shaft to mechanical. It was a lot of work. (machinist by trade) machine and welded up the case. then the case warped, so I had to sleeve and align bore the tail shaft output bushing and seal. Then made a spit sleeve to move the mech. speedo gear on the output shaft. It worked in the end, but you would not want to pay for the time I have in it. But when I work for myself I don't charge myself for time. this is my hobby. There is a good chance that the epoxied tailshaft will work. What did they do with the speedo gear on the output shaft? It has been over 6 years since I did the conversion so I don't remember all the details.

    Henry J -

Can you PM the guy's Ebay ID? I personally would have no problem using that tailshaft. I happen to need one, so I'd like to touch base with him to see if he has another one available.

    Thanks...

    Chris

I am not in any kind of parts business, but I know where 7-8 mech T5's are. I'll be glad to help in anyway I can. I'll ride over to the junkyard and grab a few for you guys,if needed.

If you want to get your own parts,I'll tell you where the yard is. I posted pics of it in another thread.

I would wager you could re-sell every single one, at a markup that would make it worth your while.

The T5 drive gears are now available in 7 and 9 tooth. PM me if you need one.

I'm also the one that does the T56 cable speedometer drive conversions.
