It's not often that we see a supercharged engine on the cover of the magazine for big business. All I have to go by is what we can see here so I'll presume that we're looking at a cut-away illustration of a Roots type blower (as in a forerunner of the famous 6-71) on an inline GMC Diesel engine.

I'm looking to identify this Altered Class Coupe.

    Body Make and Year?

    Anyone know who built it?

How about what state it may have been from?

Thanks for another trip down memory lane.

I still have many of the exact same magazines sitting in my shop today.

They used to cost .25 cents and I would always save my money so I could buy them.

Never had the money or the tools at that point in time buy I knew someday I would the money and tools so I would read each story 10 times and that is how I started to learn what to do and what not to do.

For .25 cents you could really learn at great deal from those little magazines.

    Thanks for the great images.
I did spot the "Snow Job" one from my home town. Stopped by to show it to one of the original builders Bob Austin this afternoon. He got a big kick out of seeing it.
Said it was a 1958 car show at our War Memorial Arena. He also said the models were college gals from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) who were happy to pose for the photographer.
Bob is still an active legend around here. Always willing to help you out and shares some great stories.

  10. Don't get confused about what you are looking at! You are not looking at a forerunner of a 6-71, you are looking at a 6-71 Detroit Diesel from which hot rodders took the Rootes style blower. (may also be a 1-, 2-, 3-, or 4-) If your blower wasn't made by Detroit Diesel, it isn't a 6-71 it is a copy of a 6-71. This bugs me, can you tell!!!!!!!!!

Right you are. Thanks for the correction. After some research, I found this:

1939 - The first Detroit Diesel 3-71 and 4-71 engines were available in heavier models.

1940 - Detroit Diesel 6-71 engines were released for the heaviest models.

There's lots of other interesting info and photos at this link, too.

Sorry ...I don't recall... That post was like three years ago and I sold all my old car magazines about 8 months ago when I had a massive garage clean up. Great looking 34 though.

Funny, but this chevy custom has some looks of '48 Studebaker Starlight coupe - doesn't it?

Here's an idea for a front suspension that reminds me of a steamroller.

Cool pics and article. Unfortunately as typical with George, no credit was gient o the original builder (s). This car was the Chrisman coupe log before Barris turned it into the Dobie Gillis hot rod. Just spitting hairs I guess. But still a wicked car. Jut giving credit where do especially for the performance the car achieved.

  30. Thank you to all for this thread.
It takes a lot of effort to put this together and the end result is terrific entertainment as well as a history lesson back in time.
