Hey guys, my 1961 Ford F-100 (292 V8) ran fantastic, then I ran out of gas. Now, it turns over fine, but it won't start. - fuel line squirting the carb fine - added in-line fuel filter just in case - replaced coil - replaced distributor & rotor - checked and replaced plugs Tonight I'm checking for a spark using the spark plug-against-metal test What am I missing?
If it fires with gas squrited into the carb it is a fuel problem. Most likey a bit of dirt on either the carb needle/seat or one one of the check valves in the fuel pump. Remove fuel line from carb and stick into a container ,crank engine. Fuel flow = needle/seat issue. No fuel flow =pump or line issues.
Sorry I wasn't clear. The fuel line is squirting fuel into the carb just fine. It acts like it isn't getting a spark.
Make sure you have a good ground connection inside the dist. Most Fords have a small ground wire from points plate to dist body, they can break.
Pull a plug wire and see if you get spark. If you don't, pull the coil wire and repeat the process. If nothing there make a quick test light and check for power at the positive side of the coil.
Points and condensor will do this... What about a ballast resistor... Don't know of fords have those but you might want to look into it. If the spark isn't blue but yellow then it's the condenser. You can burn points out even if they are new
I confirmed that I'm getting no spark at the plugs. Checking resistor and power from new coil tonight Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Trouble shooting 101 ! Needed 1 test light. Pull dist cap and make sure points are OPEN. Turn on key. Make sure test light is working. connect test light to movable point,if no power there work your way back to the switch till power is found. If power at movable side of points ,connect other side of light to the fixed point. If your light does not light you have a ground issue in the dist body. Also just for grins hook a jumper wire to the switch side of the coil and see if you are getting spark then while cranking. Ya ain't working on the Luner Lander ! LOL
John, you are correct, it's the distributor ground. I was only getting about 1/10th the volts to the coil. It had nothing to do with running out of gas. I ***umed I ran out because I was pretty low. Replacing the distributor now.
New distributor and it fired right up. Runs even smoother than before. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Those ***umptions can cost plenty of time and money heading the wrong way. Glad to hear you are back up and running.
