Moving to Houston...maybe...way OT

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fur biscuit, Nov 8, 2005.

  1. I just popped a couple of jobs apps in for the Houston area. i really don't know why, but since i did, can any of you native texas help me out with any potential snags i am going to hit down there. or am i just nuts?

my problem is that i have a maritime, oil, and a construction backround, and i was looking for work in the maritime industry so i am limited on where i can go. so what are your thoughts, who knows...help

    thanks - doug

Limited, maritime???? Isn't the planet 70% water?

Houston is a good big town. We really don't have much for seasons, except Hurricane and not hurricane season. Its always pretty humid. 4-5 months out of the year you will be A/C dependent. The rest of the year you'll be loving it. We have lots of traffic, and urban sprawl doesn't begin to set the tone. Living inside the 610 loop is nice but pricey. Living in any of the 'burbs is still nice but probably a commute to anywhere.

We have a ****ty NFL team, a decent basketball team, a kick *** baseball team, and all new covered stadiums.

I work downtown, and lived down here until 3 months ago. Now I live in the southwest suburb of Sugar Land and am still getting accustomed to the commute.

There are quite a few folks on the board from this area.

I think you are hittin H-town at the right time. Where do you think the companies who are going to fix those thousands of damaged rigs in the Gulf of Mexico are located? That's right Houston.

Yeah, InDaShop hit it right on all the marks. That's H-Town.

Lived on and off in Houston area for the last 25-odd years, came back from the other side of the world missing Texas a few times. I think the biggest factor is your personal situation. Alone and struggling in any major US city is ****ty, while a good job, family of some sort around you, being into some good scene (music, cars/bikes, whatever) and state of being will get you through even frozen wastelands like St.Paul, MN for a while.

Best wishes my friend in your searches and travels.

    -David

PS> InDaShop, I'm in Sugar Land too, been here around 6 years. Before in a nice part of Montrose for about a decade. Feel free to hit my email if anything is happening. I'll buy ya a Lone Star for sure!

  6. ya, you are right, i need some tech on how to prep my *** for houston. :D

  7. thanks for the heads up on housing locations. i have no clue if i will even land anything...the world maybe 70% water (i think more) but the industry is pretty small and very secular these days.

    Take off Denise! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif

Not many guys (other than me) wear hats and boots.

Anyway, read this old post, or do a search for "Houston" by modernbeat to see my other posts on Houston.

One of the best things about Houston is that there are ALL types of employment and industry from fine art, to industrial art.

To sum it up, the heat ****s, living costs are cheap, there's a large middle cl***, and it's easy to make a living.

Ya know, it's funny what a person thinks of when they hear a word. I hear or see the word "Houston" and I think of you. When I think of you, I think black t-shirt, black truck, cowboy hat and boots. :D

I didn't mention the fire ants, flying wood roaches or the hurricanes either, but every location has it's tradeoffs. Frankly, in my experience Houston has a lot fewer mosquitos than Florida, Lousiana, Maine, Alaska, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, or Alabama.

What is really a downer is if you put yourself in a situation where you have to commute to work.

    Don't.

We don't have the worst freeway congestion, but it sure seems like we're trying.

  17. what ever i land will have to be really cool, or pay well, cause i currently have a 10 minute door slam to door slam commute (15 minutes if i get coffee)

That's true if you count May through November as 5 months. Frequently humid enough here that you'll want the AC on at 75 degrees outside temp, We have about a two month spring, a 5 month summer and roughly a two month fall but it's widely variable. It's "fall" supposedly today but the forecast high is for upper 80s. On t'other hand a really hard freeze is a rarity. We did have a spot of snow this last winter but that is extremely uncommon. 70-80 degree temps in the "winter" are also not uncommon. Summers can be ******* hot but nightime is tolerable for cruising.

It can be sweet to be in shirtsleeves when folks north of the Smith & Wesson Line are freezing their ****s off.

Well, that was subtle........................... :p Thanx  ;)

I just recently made a trip to Houston. I was picking up a truck bed for another project, & arrived in Houston at 4:00 pm- BIG, BIG mistake. I was only at the guy's casa for 30 minutes, but by the time I got out of Houston it was 7 pm! As far as the state of Texas goes, Houston has one of the (if not THE) worst rush hours. There is alot to do, though, & the car scene is decent there, too. Unlike Corpus Christi- there is no scene.

  21. sounds like the commute action is just as bad as here (except mine) except that Houston is so humid you have to run your windshield wipers to clear the condensate of the windshield in the summer time...i will let you guys know if anything happens (who knows)

    thanks all...

  22. Despite what some will tell you, we do in-fact have four seasons here in Houston. Hot---hot with humidity---hot as hell with lots of humidity--and incredibly hot with water soaked air to breath. Other than that, the weather is great most of the time. I live in the North-West part of town (Spring,TX) and have gotten used to the traffic, albeit on occasion I have this strong urge to kill everyone else on the road. We have a really ****ty, but new NFL team, a first rate Baseball team, and who cares about the NBA,,,not me. We do have a really nice drag strip located in Baytown (about 20 miles away). Hope to see ya down here soon.

Hell yeah! Enough ********tin' bout this. I declare the third Tuesday of every month cruse night for Houston HAMBERs. We will gather after work at the West Alabama Ice House. Ifn' you need directions: It's on West Alabama Street between Montrose and Shepard, and it has been there since 1928 or so. Tuesdays are dead there so there will be plenty of room to park your *****en hot rod (or in my case truck) right in front, or on the side of the place.

The first cruse night will be this coming Tuesday, the 15th...because that works for me! Then every third Tuesday night after that until there is no more gas left on earth!
