Got 4 repo. '40 deluxe hub caps and want to paint the logo on the hub cap. Can I apply acrylic enamel directly or is it necessary to lay down a primer first? Did Ford use a primer then paint? Basically block letters but looks challenging to mask off, is there a better way?

Here is something that worked quite well for me. Just smear a very light coating of a light weight grease on the entire surface of the hubcap. Take a Q-tip with a dab of paint thinner and carefully remove the grease where you want to apply your paint. Then just take a rattle can of your choice of color and spray. When paint is fully dry, just wash the grease off with Dawn dish soap. No maskng tape required. I use this when I paint between fins too.

You paint the letters in with a small brush. Go to a hobby store. Take care. All it takes is co-ordination.

Like both techniques, wonder if spray on white lithium grease would work, might give it a try.
    Thanks

I wonder if Pam cooking spray might work.

mask the hubcap leaving the letters exposed and spray the letters with paint. Then get a rag ( I like to use a piece of a old T shirt) damped with Acetone or Lacquer Thinner and carefully wipe away the paint around the letters. You can use a Q tip for the smaller areas.
Do not soak the rag or Q tip with thinner. Damped not Soaked.

......This is the way to go. It's pretty straightforward, the grease thing is over-kill. Take a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to just the emblem or letters to make sure there's no wax, grease or finger oil left on them, then take your time with a small brush. It's all about the patience. I will admit that I've used Vaseline on the fins of valve covers when I just wanted to spray between the ribs and the rest of the cover. Used a very light film and washed it off with soapy water after the paint has dried completely.

All good ideas here,I've gone as far as using a toothpick to push paint around on fine lines or edges.
Take your time and enjoy the task at hand whatever method you choose.
