Projects Rear end I.D. Help

Hello

I bought a 54 Chevy and it came with this 10 Chevy rearend.

I was wondering if anybody knows what it came out of?

The spring perch is weard, 1 u bolt up and over on tire side, 2 bolts on pumpkin side bolts perch to spring plate under spring then 1 small u bolt on back side of axel over spring and threw bottom plate.

There is a casting on pass rear fin has D 7 3

 

The shock mounts are something else, though, as the stock for the axle ones would not line up with the car's ones.

There should be a stamping on the passenger's side axle tube, on the top, if it is still visible. That will give you the exact details.

 

I was feeling around but cant find them, I would have to take it out completely.

the shock mount is held by its own u bolt and separate from the axle mount.

ill see if I can get a measurement of wms to wms

 

The width alone should shed some light on it. The ratio you can determine via the rotation method. Either way, as long as it is in good working order, it is a good axle, unless you are running absurd power through it.

It is probably from an early Camaro, or a Nova.

 

wire brush the passenger side near top front. you should see some numbers stamped in it.

If it is a 1973:

If it is 60-1/4" wide it is a Nova.

If it is 62-1/2" it is a Camaro.

 

the funky shock mount is the original part from the 54.

This is the power plant, 454 .030 over, hydro l-88 style cam with 4 speed

That there is a lot of power for a 10 bolt

 

Yeah, about that....

It does not matter what it is, or where it came from. All that matters is where it's going. To another owner, or the scrapper, whole, or in as many pieces as you care to pick up.

 

No traction, no break lol

From what I found is its a corporate 8.5 gm 10 bolt.
Doesn't mean much but it replaced the 12 from what I've read along with having the same pinion as a 12 bolt.

Test it out, maybe a 8.8 or a 12 bolt to come

 

with a rear girdle, axles , c clip eliminators s and welding the tubes to the housing ( the weak link on all gm axles ) you can put up to 750 hp thru them , we race a O/t camaro with a 462 and weighs 3300 pounds and run 10.05s with it @135Mph, and been using the same rear for 9 years now with no problems , . and it will carry the front end a good foot off the ground when its launched , so do not underestimate there capabilities .

the biggest problem with the 8.5 was busting the c clip button off the axle and watch the axle come out of the tube . when I was a kid I went thru axles about once every 2 weeks due to that , once I pu the eliminators on never had a problem
