I am building a new Flathead engine for my AV8 and would like the advice from you flathead experts on your opinion as whether to use a standard or high volume oil pump. I have a 8ba that has been bored .125 with Ross pistons, 4" merc crank, max 1 camshaft and balanced, I am planing on using 3 97 carbs with MSD distributor. any help would be appreciated. Cobbie61
Sounds like a nice flathead. Ron Holleran on Ford Barn has a book on Flatheads called Nostalgia and he talks about oil pumps. He says the high volume aftermarket pumps bypass more oil through the pressure relief valve. This is oil the engine does not need and causes more heat buildup when it bypasses and is harder on the cam gear. He suggests a 49-53 stock oil pump. John
I know high volume means it pumps more oil but is it actually better? I'm in pizza delivery and my oil pump went out and I have to change it anyway and I'm just wondering if I should go ahead and put the money into a high volume pump or just go with the standard? Advise and knowledge much appreciated!
I just built or had built a nice flathead in which I read much and asked a lot of questions. I did not want a "new" pump of lesser quality than my old one and read a bunch regarding "new" pumps having bypass issues and decided to just have the stock pump that came out of my running engine verified for tolerances which where spot on. It was cleaned really well, lubed, new lid gasket (check tolerance here) and reinstalled.
