Technical F100 Brakes to 32 spindles...feasible?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by rat bastad, Jan 29, 2014.

  1. Hey guys...I did a search but cant find the info Im looking for?

I already run these brakes on my 32 coupe with square back 48 spindles, great swap.

Im curious as to whether these will bolt up to original 32 spindles? If so, what adapter is required to allow the backing plate to mount up correctly and where can they be sourced?

All the bearing info I already have so any tips would be much appreciated fellas !

    Anyone done this swap?

Yes ... You have to use the model a " juice brake adaptor kit" but the 32 spindle is slightly inferior as the thrust washer is on top... I think I would leave it alone..

  4. I ran them on my sons' roadster for years. Thin thrust bearings between the lower axle boss and spindle help a lot...

mate anything is feasible. even a left handed widget can be made to go on a right hand thread.

    but should it?

you shoul be able measure all the basic info from your two setups. i have a pair of 32 spindles here if you want measurements from them. but will F 1 brakes really suit your pre war roadster? i would think up to 41 when the US entered the war is your cut off date.

therefore, early ford brakes or the lincoln ones fit more with what you want. plus they are right there to be seen , the F1 will stick out like dogs balls as NQR.

    OR....
go one step further and adapt hydraulics to your mechanical backing plates. saw it here somewhere ages ago.

F1 is not for you mate you will kick yourself down the track.

As Flatoz says, there are Lincoln brakes that will bolt straight up to the 32 spindles. Also, Richard Lacy (early V8 Garage) has a nice king-pin kit that uses the thin bearings.
Works like a charm on my 32

  7. Haha....very true amigo re the pre WWII parts on the car. Thats pretty much why I was considering the Lincolns from the outset.

But seeing a fellow Hamber had a set up for grabs got me to thinking as to how they would best be adapted to 32 spindles and the process involved.

Adapting juice components to the mech brake backing plates/drums...nowTHAT Id like to see !!

Somewhere on here is a post on converting 32-34 backing plates to self energising, bendix style brakes

    Great post.

Has pictures where he cut out all the inner brackets etc, then cut out sections of the 32 backing plate and welded in sections from a later plate to give hime the pivot points and wheel cylinder mounts

The bendix bits were either a) F250 12" or b) 1970's Chevy big wagon .....can't remember which, seen both covered in posts here

Very nice work, with lots of great pictures

.......pity I can't find the thread

Just spent 20 mins searching for it, no luck

BUT it is here somewhere ......post a link when you find it :D

PS ....I agree with corey, just fit repop lincoln and get on with the build

    Thanks Al

    The search here is pathetic

A search with the key words "convert 32 plate to bendix"
doesn't find a thread with the title "Tech: Converting '32-'34 backing plates to Bendix style!"
