Went to the Swap Meet in Moultrie Ga today. I have a question for everyone out there. Is it just me or has all of the big swap meets gotten to be just larger vendors and people selling the same cheap Chinese ****. Where has the guys and girls next door bringing out the stuff from their garages gone?
I was very disappointed in what was there. It seems to be that way every time I have gone lately. The Turkey Rod Run was good. Is it this way every where now? Your Thoughts?

The Feb swap meet is smaller that the Nov one.The weather Fri was foggy and damp cool. But went anyway to get this year started

  3. The real stuff is getting depleted as are the ol' boys that collect/hoard and hawk it. All types of "antiques are are in the same way?

I think it depends on what you're looking for. Tri-five Chevy, and to a somewhat lesser degree, Ford stuff is still being offered. But sometimes we forget that a '34 Ford is now 80 years old and there aren't too many of them left that aren't either already restored or rodded. Just not too much out there to bring and offer for sale.
And the old farts like Skip and myself who scrounge this stuff up to sell are disappearing also.

The internet has killed the swapmeet... I noticed it at Moultrie about 5 years ago and stopped going. It was becoming a place for vendors to sell new **** and the parts just weren't worth the 5 hour drive. Shame, because this used to be the best swapmeet in the south.

I hadn't thought of it that way. But makes sense.

    LOL Thought so

I do get some of my parts from the internet as well, but it is usually after I have searched the swap meets and local sources and not found it. But I do so enjoy the interaction with the fellow car enthusiast and my friends that I go to the meets with.

I've been going for about 14 years and it's bigger every year. "Back in the day" the dirt to the right of the entrance was empty. The area around the gate way down the left was empty. The car corral was about half what it is now. Every time an old part gets sold it's one less for the swap, has to be less of them each year. Not everyone is into 30/40 cars accept it. Still the best bang for you're buck around. See you in November.

Finding stuff at a swap meet is very unpredictable..... Look for some thing & end up with some thing else.

Have lots of $$$ to spend & find "nothing" ...... have little $$$ and find "lots".

Anymore I don't get my "swap meet HOPES" up too high.

I agree it is a good way to meet & talk with other hot rod guys & to get a good idea of what prices are doing on the market..... and also to feel the WARMTH of the Sun. Something we have NOT had here in SW PA. for a LONG TIME..... "Think Spring" !!!!!

Not getting wadded up over it, just asking for input. I have watched it grow over the years and change. I have been going for over 20 years to both Nov and Feb meets. I do get to others around the southeast and some more up towards to northern areas. I guess I need to start going west some more. Willbe what are some must go to events out Texas way?

Thanks Willbe that's a lot of events.

I have been in all types of weather at the Moultrie events. This time it was misty rain and a balmy 50 degrees, which is better than the 19 degrees we had earlier in the week.

It's true. Us old guys are getting older and out less. What parts we have we're keeping until we go to that great junk yard in the sky. Then our kids will hopefully take them to the swap meets and the process will begin again.
Also, as cars actually get built with those parts, there will be less original parts to sell.
Yes, I find that many vendors are there now to sell Chinese junk and other cheap replacement parts.I suppose those are better than nothing if we are not able to make our own like a few guys here do.
I've found many things I've needed over the years. I've also gone and found nothing. But the hunt, looking at kool junk, and visiting other crazy car guys has been the most fun.

I went... The weather on Friday was miserable. 100-percent humidity, but not raining. The 40-degree weather seemed like 30s with the damp just hanging in the air.
By the end of the day it had warmed up. We got there at 9, which we figured was a little late, and there were no cars in the car corral, and the vendors were sp****. We started at the near end, and as we made our way to the other end, the vendors had moved in. I did talk to a lot of vendors, and they said it was the poorest Friday turnout they've seen in years.

But, I found a couple good deals, and my buddy Mac The Yankee found a bunch of good stuff. (He was in Shop Mode a whole lot more than I was)

I think it's a good show with a good mix of new/commercial vendors and guys bringing vintage stuff.

What surprises me every year is that some guys bring practically nothing, or stuff that should be set out at the curb on Garbage Day, and pay the price for a space all weekend. Even if they sold all of it, I don't think they'd break even! I've noticed that's unique to Moultrie.

  18. It's fairly prevalent at Charlotte as well. Fortunately, there's maybe 8000 vendor spaces, so it's not so obvious.
This year was likely off because of the Atlanta/Birmingham freak snowstorm. All us guys further north were afraid to go with all the negative news coverage of interstate gridlock.....and just figured a LOT of people wouldn't even try to go. Sounds like we were right.

You're right about the weather--Mac the Yankee and I took back roads to stay off the interstate for that reason.

I've noticed that at Charlotte too. What I've REALLY noticed is that a lot of inside vendor spaces at Charlotte are now just parking spaces. Lots of guys get a vendor space inside, and just use it as up-close parking, with no parts for sale.

I wish something could be done about that. I would kill for two spaces inside the track.

Anyone have a pair and planning on giving them up?

I haven't been to Charlotte in a few years. I am contemplating going this year. Brad I have been to yours a few times and it is growing nicely and the items there are of better quality than most. I might even bring out some of my stuff to sell.

They always a lot of spaces open in Feb

  25. That's interesting, because the gentleman announced over the loud speaker for people not to park in empty spaces, because they were all sold...

I have the feeling that the weather may have played into Friday, at least.

As far as what was/wasn't there, swap meets are ALWAYS a conglomeration of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

We came in on Sat morning just as they open up and we went back through a lot of it later after more vendors showed up. The weather was ****py at first and later on improved and the crowds increased. But to me it just seams that the Bad and Ugly tends to be more and more these days. But I will keep going until I can't, it's like a treasure hunt you never know when you will find that special part that you have been looking for.

I think (?) swap meets are a "**** shoot". I've gone to small ones and SOME TIMES bought something either I wanted ,needed, didn't need, unique or rare. Also gone to big meets like Moultrie & Daytona and sometimes left empty handed, sometimes not..

I also believe between hoarders (been quilty of that, sorry!) gas & room prices and set up cost for 2, 3, or more days plus loading and hauling, set up, tear down, MAYBE good sales, MAYBE not, are part of the problem.

I'm allmost 69 ,bad joints and getting lazier by the day....I still enjoy going to some meets and I hate to admit it but I can sit in my "Lazy Boy" recliner and buy stuff I pretty much don't really need 365 days a year. I think that ****s but thats what its come to,,,,Yes, I'm part of the problem.

Well, gotta get off here and check EVIL BAY for g***er wheels, parts and cars.
    Regards,Joe

it is hard to say I stopped in there on a Sunday on my way back from the 24 hours of Daytona race. There was a lot of stuff already gone. I am hoping to go back when I can be there during "prime time"
