Here is a recent gift from my Dad.This has always been his "pride and Joy" and since his 8th stroke he isn't able to drive anymore and he wanted me to have this ole gal and let it be seen.He added a Continental Wheel kit and a few other things and still needs a few little things.Overall with 54k original miles on her I just can't wait for nice weather to try it out.I just wanted share her with you all.I am glad to be a new member and I am sure there's alot of info here.. Danny
I have helped Pops find some various parts for it.I am a GM Parts Mgr and researching parts is what I have been doing for over thirty years. The more I research this series the more I am learning and just loving it.I still have it at Pops till the Spring so I am stoked just to get it home and start enjoying the TLC on it.I haven't ever driven it so i bet that will be different with it having manual steering ..Thanks
I still have the car at Dads and have been there today going over things I would like to do.The car has a Hydromatic.I also have the original parts catalog and for a parts guy that is so cool.I finally took a pic of the body plate and by info on the the plate,it says it's a 58-2731 which says a Cheftain Catalina Coupe?...Just a lot of little things I want to do,replace some weather strips that are showing age...Things that will be fun to do..... A lot to learn but that's part of the fun.......
Thanks Jesse..I could see the sadness when he was signing it over to me.I know when he was younger he had one of these and that's the reason later in life he found one.I plan on carrying it along. They just need to be seen,I haven't seen any in these parts so it will be seen for sure. Danny
Welcome from Indy, love the 58. I too am leaving my car to my son. On the advice of a lawyer, I have the car titled in his and my name. That way there is no questions down the road. Your pops sounds like a cool guy.
Danny, Welcome to the hamb. Sorry about your dad. He must really love the car. Don't forget to take him for a ride now and then. My dad would only own a Pontiac. He had a lot of them through the years.
Thanks guys for the kind words.I will keep y'all posted as time goes on and the additions I do.I am torn rather to leave the Continental wheel kit on.I think Dad would like it left on though.I have always loved the Crager mag wheels and and a little lift in the back but for now this style is cool too! where is the best place to find parts?I do need to replace a door glass and some weatherstripping....
My uncle had a 58 Chieftain when I was a kid. It had the factory tri-power. He drove it til about 71. by then it was rusted pretty bad so He gave it to me and we went thru the 370 and used it in a pullin tractor for a while. Now that very same 370 tri-power Pontiac lives in my 54 Olds with the 4 speed hydro. I really like that 58, hope your Dad is doing well. I have several cars that will go to my son when I check out, hope he don't see this and knock me in the head!
You can always re-install the continental kit, although I understand you wanting to keep your father happy. Some wheels and a rake sounds cool. Most guys want to set their ride on the rocker panels, it would be cool to see something raised up a tad instead.
Here is a shot of the inside.I need to dye the seats because of fading overall I believe they were done at one time.
Where is a good place to get Insurance? I am with State Farm and they only do it as a favor cause I have been with them for so long. They go by a Market value which is usually very low according to Agent.I just want to know other options that would get me close to worth of the car..and what do you go by on value with a Classic?.Thanks
Might check with California Pontiac Restoration for some of your parts. I'd leave the wheel kit as is. Maybe if you want, get a differant set of wheels and swap it back and forth for your liking.
NICE...dads are awesome...love it..im sure you can drive him around together and spend some good times
Guys.I got to spend a long awaited warm sunny day here in VA.I added some premium gas and fired her and uncapped the lakes and boy was I a grinin. She hadnt been started since September and it purred like a kitten..I finally have made arrangements on a single car garage and hopefully soon I can bring her home..I spent the day doing some minor weatherstrip work.Keep ya'll posted.. Danny
Welcome and nice ride you got there! I am working on a '57 Chieftain myself. There isnt much to my build thread yet but check it out when you have time. I look forward to seeing more of your progress with it.
