Just go there and tell them it's over 25 years old and exempt from registration penalties, and print off the relevant code sections from the online DMV site to back you up. I've done it, many on here have done it, my friends have done it...

Actually I was in the same boat as you, let me reg lapse and didn't want to pay penalties, so I kept taking my reg into the DMV every time I was there for other matters to see if it had fallen out of the computer yet. Then finally one day I got a clerk who knew her ****, notice the age of my car and waived the penalties right then. That's how I originally found out about it, but have done it since by educating non-imformed clerks.

The bigger question is when is the Department of Money Vultures going to eliminate this exemption.

If a DMV clerk had another brain, it would be lonely...

Thata exactly what I kept doing with the old registration. What would I have to do? Put the car on my insurance to get the current reg then put it on non op and pull it back off of insurance? That's what they had told me.

How much were your back fees before they were waived?

No you shouldn't have to put it on a no op, they should just drop the back fees and issue you a current reg. My car was insured even though it wasn't registered, so you may need to do that. I owed about $300-$400 as I recall including back fees, but it was less than $100 after they dropped them.

Since I have AAA I was thinking of going there but there are a lot of things that theyb can't do. So I'm probably stuck going to the DMV right?

I don't know if AAA has the capability to exempt penalties or not.

Hi Blacktop! Rialto to be exact! Where bouts you from!?

So I'm curious on what there rate is. I'm on a budget so it left me searching for whats more convinient for me at this time. But if the price is fair ill opt for there service. Im a great actor ;) if needed to. Walk in there saying it was an 18th bday gift from mom. Left it sitting for the last 14 yrs. I since lost the ***tle and that's why I'm here..(cars not in any system i know that)..need not say more! Prob fill out a "statement of facts" then give them what they mostly want...my dead presidents!
I seen guys beeing called up to the counter with YOM plates in there hands at the Redlands DMV so I'm sure I won't be the first and some one must know something! If I decide to do the above mentioned ill be going there. For now I'm just sitting patiently, and reading on..thank you all by the way.

"A gift from Mom" is good but leaves it more complicated because they want a statement of facts from everyone down the chain.
Abandoned on your property rules because there is one person in the chain.... You!
    Now go act away! ;~)

Do I need to take the car down to dmv?; or just walk in with vin #
Doesn't have an engine so I want to register before I go any further.

You're going to need the VIN verified, either by CHP or DMV. Engine shouldn't matter, only for motorcycles. Some independent verifiers will come to your house and do it, for a fee of course.

Well, when I did this one (75 4x4 highboy), I did it in stages. One trip down without the truck to get paperwork started. This was key, because once they acknowledged the vehicle and got it in the system, it all fell into place.

I left with paperwork and then needed to weigh the truck (at my convenience). Then an appt. with chp for vin verify (actually DMV gives you the verification form and a "qualified amigo" may do it for you). Back to dmv and done.

Sounds like a bunch of steps, but you wouldn't have the weigh part and once they start the paperwork, you have lots of time to finish.

Good luck. Didn't want to be negative about the private verifier I used, but I'll do it myself now.

Stand your ground and when you get stuck at the window, ask if a supervisor can help. They usually get things rolling in a stalemate. Especially if you have knowledge.

Was that more than 2 cents?

I really want to have all this squared away for my 56. I just don't know which steps to take since I can't take much time off of work and the car isn't near me. Unless they (DMV) will allow someone other then myself to take the paperwork for me.

You have an advantage over me...my car is in countless peices, yours was able to be taken to the dmv.

Sorry, I was replying to Buickvalve earlier, I should have quoted him. If yours is in the Ca DMV system it does not need a VIN verification.

Well, I was in the same boat as you with my 31. That's why I used a verifier. I "set" the motor somewhere between the frame rails and got it verified as a vehicle.

Well it was in the system. The thing is the reg hasn't been paid since 06 or 07 and I thought I had put it on non op but the DMV said I hadn't. So where do I stand now?

    Mitch,
John aka Bigdaddy hooked me up with her too. She is super easy and gets it done quick. John still uses her.

  20. You've gotten some good advice and some ****ola.
    You have two choices
    1. Hire a DMV go between, like some have suggested
    2. Go back to post 16 and follow the directions
