polysphere/red ram/55 plymouth performance and highway driving...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by begborrowandsteel, Nov 9, 2005.

  1. Ok heres the deal:

I've got a 55 plymouth with a polyhead 240 v-8 i'm looking to give it some more power i've seen tri carb intakes, but are there anyother parts that would give me more power maybe a 4brl manifold?? and the cars my daily so a motor rebuild/ any machine work is out of the question.

also i'm looking to make the car better on the highway for the longer trips it'll do about 70 but it's screaming i assume that the best way to do this would be swaping rear gears, but there is a flip side i still need some low end power to get me up the hill around here any suggestions? it's a heavy under powered car so i'm kida of outta ideas anything would be helpful.

What gears are you running in the rear? A moderate change in that rearend will get put you over 80 while cruisin on the highways, and unless you are almost rolling back down that hill, you'll still be able to make it up. Either that or throw a four barrel on that bad chicken.

You actually have a 259". Hemi stuff will fit but not worth the trouble in the real world. I have not looked at the ports in the poly heads. The Dodge hemi's of that vintage suffered from huge bosses around the intake guides. When Chrysler finially made the bosses dissappear in the 325's, the power went way up. This would cost nothing but a gasket kit and some time. I read that time is critical so may not be feasible. The 4-bbl manifolds are very expensive. 3-2's would be cheaper and you could run your old carb.

Also the cams in the hemi's were very mild. Isky can grind you a cam and it will help but not as much as cleaning up the intake ports.

My book lists both 241 & 259 polys in 55, some 259s w 4 bl. You didn't say what tranny you have. The Chr. hemi adaptors work on the Dodge ( your poly is built on a Dodge Hemi block) so you could upgrade to a modern tranny, 904, TH350, 700R4 or Mopar or GM stick. Better drivability & milage!

The block is the same as the dodge HEMI block. So anything you can get for the 241 HEMI will work in this. I think the place is called Hot Heads that does a lot of HEMI stuff and can get you a lot of stuff. They also sell tranny aapters. Offy makes a 3x2 intake that you should be able to get from Vaphead, thats who I got mine from. I know Kanter sells rebuild stuff.

I am putting one in a '23 Dodge when I get around to that project. Mine is a 55k mile 260 Poly.

I only checked on the engine I have. You will have to call Hot Heads to check on the '60's stuff. If I had to guess I would say they should have something.
