Projects Helping a friend restore 63' Ford Fairlane 4/21

Lookin' good, man! Keep it up. Reminds me of my buddy's '63 he had when we were in HS. Maroon poly, black bucket interior, white molding insert, chrome slots. Sharp as hell, but dog-ass tired w/260-auto.

You guys are doing a good job bringing this one back to life, good on ya!

 

We've had a snow week. I've been hanging out with Justin quite a bit (drifting around in the powerstroke last night) but haven't touched the fairlane as it's too damn cold. haha

 

No updates. Life has been getting busy for all of us, but we have been talking about what were gonna do next on it. We need to check the timing gear and chain, we think it might have rounded off. Stay tuned.

 

Updates, they are a comin'! We moved the Fairlane to Justin's house last night...after cleaning the garage! So now theres gonna be some all nighters. And yes there will be more high def. pictures.

 

So upon moving the car to Justins, we've been trying to start the car-no luck what so ever. We tried everything you could think of, got several opinions and we were cranking it yesterday and it started knocking..soo...after a quick search on Craigslist we got ahold of a guy in Chesire with a running 289 so we went and looked at it, heard it run, and Justin bought it with some extra goodies. Tonight we pulled the Fairlanes engine out at my buddies shop in the cold rain. Then tomorrow we are gonna try and put it in my garage to get the engine bay prepped and new engine cleaned and get it in and running. And I'm getting the tired 289 for exchange for my work. SO NOW stay tuned!

Good job guys. Now's the time to really dig into that engine bay. Take your time & clean the hell out of it, prep, paint, & detail. It'll pay big dividends in the long run. Same with the engine. Have fun most of all.

 

Didn't that car have a 260? With a 5 bolt bellhousing?

No, it was a 170 (?) straight six.

 

You said above that you're getting the tired 289 for your efforts and your earlier pictures show a V8.

Anyway, my point is that the new 289 may not mate with the existing transmission. 5 bolt bellhousing versus 6 bolt.

 

I think he's trying to say it was 170 six cylinder from the factory, which seems right because it doesn't have the 260 emblems. Also, the valve covers on the motor are 67 or newer, so it was most likley swapped in at some point with a c4 tranny.

 

The engine in the Fairlane now is a 66 289 from a mustang with stock three on the tree from the fairlane, the new engine is a 68 289 from a mustang and it has a c4 auto on it. Were not sure which trans we'll use. But the car is now sitting in my driveway and engine bay clean up starts tomorrow.

 

Glad you have the later bellhousing bolt pattern, and, if you are taking a poll , I vote for the manual trans

Thanks guys! Today we started pressure washing the engine bay and removing parts, prepping for paint. We also got pretty much everything sanded really good. Tomorrow we will be painting it and we'll be getting the engine Saturday morning..Were busting ass to have it running in a few weeks.

 

That car is cool as hell. I really got into old cars back in the day with a co-worker/friends 63 fairlane with a newer 302 in it. It was a pos compared to this one but it ran like a bat out of hell. Another co-worker now is building one, 62-63 and it should be done by summer. Anyway, keep the pics coming, sounds like it will be cool with its running...

 

We're busting ass! Friday night we put the car in the garage and prepped it for paint, Saturday morning we painted the entire engine bay semi gloss black, then we went at noon and got the new engine and all the goodies that came with. We brought everything back to my house and put the new engine on the stand and pushed the car out, we spent all night last night cleaning the engine and we painted it. Need to get a few things but were going good. Trying to get high-res. pictures to post, my have to put them on my photobucket..anyways here ya go!

 

Ahh memories I remember doing everything you guys are doing on my 63. Keep at it guys.

You guys are just knocking this out of the park. Kinda takes me back 40+ years! working in the rain, snow & cold. Nowadays if it's in the 50's I think twice about going out to the garage. Forget about working outside.
Loved the picture of the rear/tailight area. Had those tailights in my 56 Ford CV.
Gave it a sunken tailight look.

Memories of yesteryears. Now I'm picking out Casket colors. LOL The local Yokals at the donut shop are planing a raid on you hoodlums. V-8 and headers are a recipe for fun times. Giter Dun!!!
