We wish to fit slide in axles to a banjo diff, we have 49 truck and 50 mercury diffs available. We would like to know what the spline count on the 50 merc axles is so we can order side gears from Hotrod works with the correct spline. The diffs are still complete in the back of the shed. Is there any advantage over either, the merc is 100 percent complete. These are to go in a flathead powered 32 pickup. Have done this before with a 49 truck diff and original 49 side gears and 11 tooth spiders in a 35 36 housing, ok but a little growlie. Would like it better for next project.
Not sure on the Merc axles spline count but imPretty sure HRW only do side gears with a 28 spline count, But I could be wrong, Just done a banjo an you have to use the 11 tooth spiders, apparently ****** hard to come by over here.
Darn, so I presume 49 truck are the same, so if this is the case what do we look for to get 28 spline 5 on 5 1/2 early ford stud pattern. wiwwiQUOTE=ebfabman;9536539]The Mercury axles are 19 splined IIRC
Putting '49 Merc axles and ends was covered in a detailed tech in Car Craft magazine long ago. If my memory is working, they did the whole job with just what was available from the Merc ***embly. I have no idea where that magazine is, but maybe if someone here can turn up a copy you won't need to buy anything more. Welding on the Merc ends and machining the Merc side gears would not seem to involve any more work than adding in purchased parts.
I got a set of Yukon cut to length spline axles for my diff, you can get them undrilled as well allowing you to give them any bolt pattern you wish.. or F100-F150 9 inch axles are 5 on 5 1/2
pardon my ignorance but what are yukon axles? aftermarket? I do have a set od NOS 11 tooth spiders as per your suggestions nailhead.
The old articals i read involved turning the merc or f-1 gears to fit the banjo carrier, no ordering involved, fyi
Yukon axles are an aftermarket brand, you can get them in 2 different lengths and they have about 300mm of spline so you can just cut the to the required length. I've built several 9 inches with them and they are ****** awesome Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Heres a link Kiwi 4D, they are 8 inch axles but the same as a 28 spline 9 inch. http://www.yukongear.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=1271
Thanks for posting the link...I did not know that it was already on here, and so a lot easier to find than my paper copy! Seems like that part of my memory was correct. All parts in hand, 5 1/2" circle, all set with no further shopping needed! Fire up the machine shop...
Yes Bruce I did see this before and have got the hard copy "somewhere". But 40 ford made It easy with the link. I imagine the Yukon axles are not on the shelf as a blank in NZ. As a second choice are the F100 axles 28 spline? And around 28" long? To get a 5 on 5 1/2 pattern. Nailhead had some great info right here.
Doesn't the Merc axle or the truck one supply a matched set of shafts with 5 1/2 circle plus spider gears? What's the motivation for getting more axles?
Yes the F100 axles come in both 28 and 31 spline count, If you know your length I may have a couple here, Ive got a ton of 8 - 9 inch parts and axles. I also have 2 sets of Yukons but unfortunately they are spoken for. Garth Hogan imported a heap of them about 3 years back, Will be seeing him in the next couple of days and I can ask him if he has any left if you wish, Also the guys at the Diff Shop in Chch stock them as well. The other option is shortening and resplining some axles or if you can find the right length but the wrong bolt pattern, fill and redrill the flange. Ive done a heap of this over the years so if I can be of any help PM me, Id be glad to help out. Jason.. Heres the link to the banjo I just did for my Tudor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=827213
