9-5-65 at Lion. Look where Sutherland lined up. Pretty far right edge of the lane.

Yes he is lined up put of the groove.

    Didn't Sutherland run small engines...354s ?

I think he called them "Night Motors".

Beep's comments on this are right on the money.

Back in the smoker days, with the tire design/compounds available and track surface of the day it was a given that you were going to have considerable tire spin to work with. As the tire technology and surface improved, the driveline also had to evolve along with it. As the bite improved, in came the next generation of sliders, Lencos and powerglides and the smoke started to clear.

My experience comes from "back in the day", and when I hear about these folks wanting to do smoker runs today, I frankly don't know how to accomplish this safely. Old school rigging on a modern surface sounds like a marriage resulting in "irreconcilable differences" to me.

I can remember some nostalgia guys speaking of the possibility of doing 1/8 mile exhibition smoker runs, but they were talking about serious horsepower and basically rigging up to do long ass burnouts.

I know some won't like it at all, but my best recommendation for having fun would be to stick a good powerglide in it and go have fun, safely.

Jim Brissette and Paul ran 354s. Jim was telling about the time he put together a destroked 331 in his Woody and told Paul to make a pass. 7.58 @216 mph at San Fernando. When Jim asked Paul how was the motor felt, it was " Mighty fine ". Then Jim told Paul that he put that motor together with old parts that he and his brother Bob ran in the early sixties in their altered. Paul asked how much Nitro.....The CAN !

Most of the early cans are engine specific although some were multiple drilled. Due to the position of the bolt and dowel holes a hemi can is usually good only for a hemi because the Chevy holes overlap in a couple of areas. A steel Lakewood style can is probably your best bet and they are usually reasonably cheap. I presume that you do not need anything that will pass the SFI certification process.

If you go with a standard lakewood or hays scattershield you may need to make an inspection/adjustment opening in the upper or lower part of the bell. a buddy of mine made one in his shield then made a 1/4" cover for it that he bolted to the existing shield by tapping the shield (I think he had a bolt every inch or so around the parimiter?)

  11. BTTT. So what did you end up doing?

The HAMB drags this year may have been a bad influence on me. If I'm going to go to a clutch instead of the automatic I have setup, the sooner I make up my mind the less I'll have to change.

Safety first. Been racing a long time, and you can see the disasters coming most of the time. Not being negative, but think about what it is your trying to do with an old outdated rail. Heres an example of what happens if you don't have your shit together:
