Hey all, I have a line on a transmission for my 36, it is about 2 hours away. The fellow emailed me some pictures of it, but none of the tags appear to be on it. He said he is going to look today and see if he can find one, should be on top of the bellhousing? He bought it a few years ago for a project that never happened and knows only that it is out of a half ton. It appears to be a master/slave set up and not the hydraulic throwout bearing so pre-95? I am subcribed to the good NV3500 threads on here, from what I understand, there is no differences externaly between an NV3500 and the earlier Getrags, or is there something I am overlooking. I tried to google different years of Chevy interiors to see if the shifter was associated with a certain year but no dice. If anyone has some input that would be great.

Yes, been to both those pages, the second page there lumps the NV3500 and it's predecessors all into one listing, but from what I read, the earlier models (MG-290, HM-290, and early/late 5LM60's) are to be avoided because of weakness and obsolete parts. Just want to make sure this is actualy an NV3500, and not a museum piece.

The price isn't bad but there is a 300 dollar core charge on top of that that kills the deal unless you have a core to trade in.

Well $350 for everything, I might still roll the dice on it. I'll just drain the fluid there and see what pours out. Even if it is one of the older versions, I plan on cruising, not mashing gears, so it will probably hold up OK. Come to think of it, if I pop the shifter tower off, is there anything I will see in there that would tell me what it is?

Looks just like the one I removed from a 92 gmc 4x2 half ton. Used it in my 34 no problems.

Same as the unit going into my 27 Ford. I was told that 1st gear would be LOW but with the over-drive in 5th it should work well.
Will be using a 3.73:1 rear with 28 inch tires.
I havent had much luck finding information on it either. Mine is originally out of a 1990 c1500 PU.

I think, from a bit of googling that you can take off the shifter tower and see the one shift rod for an NV3500 and the 4 shift rods for the earlier models. I came to this conclusion from 2 pictures and an unreplied to thread on a 4x4 forum, so it may or may not be an accurate solution to IDing a tagless transmission.

Alright, with a bit of research, here is the quick way to tell the difference between 290's/5LM60's and NV3500's, from Fullsize Chevy.com.

"....One easy way to tell is to remove the shifter tower (4 bolts on the top of the trans) and look at the shifter ball where it goes into the socket in the transmission. If the ball protrudes from the shift tower gasket surface, you have the NV3500. If the ball is recessed into the shifter tower, you have an earlier design. The older design was much more complicated inside because it had 4 shift rails whereas the NV3500 simplified the design and made one common rail for all shift forks. This made them a little more reliable. Otherwise, I dont know what other distinguishing features there are on the casting. ".......

Well it sure appears to be the same trans.
I had a quick look, removed the shifter tower, and it appears to have only one rail, about one inch in dia.
It doesent have a shifter ball, rather a round cylinder more like a piston.
The trans has no tags that I have found, but it has a casting number on the passenger side. GM23049617

Guess I should have elaborated on the 34.. Chevrolet that is.

Stock pedals with the lower arm extended 1 inch to a rod actuated astro van clutch master (under floor) right next to the brake booster/master combo.

The trans out of full size pickups will take a turbo 400 size output yoke and the ones out of S-10s with a 4.3 have the smaller 350 size yoke.

Still good info. What did you do for a rear trans mount, I have beed searching the net for what will work, without much luck. I understand that overall lenght is close to a TH350, just not sure if it sits at the same height at the rear or bolt spacing.

My plan was to get one of those Chassis Engineering mounts, maybe for a TH350 so I can split my wishbone, then mod it to work with the NV3500. 99% of the internet results deal with S-10s, so not much help...

The transmission came with a round rubber mount that had a single stud mount on the bottom. The transmission casting had two threaded holes. I used a 60-70's PG/350 mount with two bolts on the top & 2 on the bottom. Bolted right up to the transmission. I built my cross member, but I would expect a 350 transmission, cross member will work just fine.
