So I'm at a Vintage clothing store this past Saturday(In San Jose,California),and ended up buying this shirt... I went to the Milan website and couldn't find much info on the Sand Drags. I does say it was opened in 1963,so that would just make the cut-off year for here. By the embroidery and it being a Hilton shirt. I'm guessing it's mid '60's. So my question is; When did Drag racing on the sand at Milan start? I can't wear a cool shirt like this without knowing the history! p.s. it's not for sale
I went there as a kid in the early & mid 60s but don't remember seeing any sand racing, all I saw was on asphalt. Maybe someone else from the area knows?
Ya thats a wierd one.. I know they had and may still have a motocross track .. But i sure dont remember any sand drags.. I have a coworker that used to go there a lot ill ask him and get back to ya . Dave
I just went to google earth to see if anything was visible and the picture shows snow..... I've never seen a picture on google earth with snow in it. What is in the clearing at the east central part of the track. Cut into the tree line? Could be a sand drag track. I went to: http://www.waterwinterwonderland.com/drags.asp?ID=1340&type=6 and looked down the list of pics and found a sat pic in the summer. Not much help here....but.... the shirt looks pretty modern with that color and the embroidery is a standard font.
The only sand drags I know about are at silver lake, a long way from Milan....and those are for sand rails and quads. Never heard of sand drags at Milan.
Maybe its the power of suggestion but I think we walked around the Milan facility back in the 80's and we saw a sand drag track. JC
Co worker says they sure as hell did and he used to race his truck there a lot.. Says he even has a video of it so there.. Question is answered.. Dave
Like 'junk says, yes indeed. It was a separate event schedule. I don't exactly when it stopped but I'd guess in the early 90s, maybe sooner. They'd run blown alky sand dragsters as well as the garden variety VW type racers. Knew a guy with a VW sand racer that could cover the track in just under 4sec.
Back when I participated in the high school drags in Milan (about 20 yrs. ago) there was a sand drag track near the pit area set up. Really never new how popular it was but it was there.
Buddy claims they were still doing it about 4 or 5 years ago but it went belly up from not enuff participation.. Dave
I am thinking 1989-90. Ill go home and look in the shoe box picture arcives. I took some pics to show my dad, the crazy ***es shootin 50 ft. rooster tails. I think Silver Lake still has drags.
US-131 (Martin) had a sand drag track at the north end of the property. Don't know when it started or if they still run it.
Yes for sure, Milan dragway had a sand track located on the east side of the pits. Its been closed for a long long time now (the sand track that is)
I sand raced at Milan from 79 to 82. I had a 455 Buick powered T bucket, and raced in the A/WP (water pumper) cl***. I held the track record for about a year.
