So I'm at a Vintage clothing store this past Saturday(In San Jose,California),and ended up buying this shirt...

I went to the Milan website and couldn't find much info on the Sand Drags.
I does say it was opened in 1963,so that would just make the cut-off year for here.
By the embroidery and it being a Hilton shirt. I'm guessing it's mid '60's.

    So my question is;
When did Drag racing on the sand at Milan start?

I can't wear a cool shirt like this without knowing the history!

    p.s. it's not for sale

I went there as a kid in the early & mid 60s but don't remember seeing any sand racing, all I saw was on asphalt. Maybe someone else from the area knows?

I just went to google earth to see if anything was visible and the picture shows snow.....
I've never seen a picture on google earth with snow in it.

What is in the clearing at the east central part of the track. Cut into the tree line? Could be a sand drag track. I went to: http://www.waterwinterwonderland.com/drags.asp?ID=1340&type=6 and looked down the list of pics and found a sat pic in the summer.

Not much help here....but.... the shirt looks pretty modern with that color and the embroidery is a standard font.

The only sand drags I know about are at silver lake, a long way from Milan....and those are for sand rails and quads.
Never heard of sand drags at Milan.

Maybe its the power of suggestion but I think we walked around the Milan facility back in the 80's and we saw a sand drag track. JC

Like 'junk says, yes indeed. It was a separate event schedule. I don't exactly when it stopped but I'd guess in the early 90s, maybe sooner. They'd run blown alky sand dragsters as well as the garden variety VW type racers. Knew a guy with a VW sand racer that could cover the track in just under 4sec.

Back when I participated in the high school drags in Milan (about 20 yrs. ago) there was a sand drag track near the pit area set up. Really never new how popular it was but it was there.

US-131 (Martin) had a sand drag track at the north end of the property. Don't know when it started or if they still run it.

My neighbor used to sand drag his Bronco there in the late 80's.

I sand raced at Milan from 79 to 82. I had a 455 Buick powered T bucket, and raced in the A/WP (water pumper) cl***. I held the track record for about a year.
