Please help ID this Gear set Dana 44 Posi?

    I was told this gears set was out of a 56 or 57 Chevy rear. I have tried researching but I can't seem to get anywhere. Perhaps someone on this site can help.

    The ring gear says 12 18 56 Dana 18426 A3R14 43-13. The axle would have 19 splines.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    3.31:1

    The tooth count is 43-13. 43 divided by 13 is 3.307692307692308.

    The Chevy in the era you specified did not have a Dana 44, in the car, at-least.

    It appears to be a Powerlock limited slip carrier.

    Could be a Studebaker "Twin Traction " Unit for the Dana 44

    I tried finding photos of a Twin Traction gear set. Nothing!

    The Dana Powr Loc looks for all intents an purposes, identical. It would not surprise me if the Studebaker moniker is marketing for the same part.

    looks like the limited slip that came in the Dana 40 (?) rear in a 59 chevy pickup I had. No springs to preload the clutch plates.

    I doubt it's a 55-57 chevy car unit. Lots of car and truck makers used the Dana rearends, including stude, international, ford, GMC, checker, etc.

    My fuzzy memory calls this out as an International Harvester application, Dana 44.

    The date code indicates December 18, 1956.

    It's configuration is common with the Dana 44 of that era. It could plausibly be from anything with a Dana 44 that year.

    Being a 3.31:1 gear might narrow it down by application. Dana was/is an OEM supplier, and sold to just about everyone.

    Well thats a lot of great info. It certainly looks like the Studebaker carrier. I guess the next questions are, if it is Stude. will it fit other makes and is it worth anything?

    It should Fit any Dana 44. Twin Traction is just a name, like positraction, sure grip, etc. I've had 2 Studebaker 44's, with the 3.31. Do a google search for Studebaker dana 44, or just Dana 44. There is a ton of info out there.

    The only things that are different in US Domestic Dana 44 differentials are axle spline count, and carrier series (which gear range it fits).

    As is, maybe $125 'ish.
