Projects Crazy Mustang II power steering rack Ghost in the car.

I have just finished installing a Mustang II front end in my 50 Chevy, everything was a tight fit. Using a T Bird power rack with a GM pump as I have a serpentine belt setup.

Today is the first time I have put fluid in the pump. No leaks and steering hoses are in the right places. Problem is as soon as I touch the steering wheel the wheel starts oscillating left to right and and right to left extremely fast to the point it sounds like it's going to break the steering column.

I have ordered the pressure valve for the GM pump to reduce the pressure. Is this the problem?

Sounds like hoses are reversed.

Yep...I did the same thing on my Model A...I put a LEE Sprint Car box in it and got the lines mixed up. When I touched the wheel it just about ripped my hand off whipping left right left right. It was scary!

Yup. Swap the hoses.

Having the hoses backward is a good way to break a thumb. Guess how I know!

 

I was just sitting here wondering how many guys have gotten hurt after connecting GM PS lines to mustang racks..after all if you connect the male to female lines it looks like that's the way the lines go...not.
My neighbor put a shiny new mustang rack under his 36 chevy with a 350 motor and stock chevy pump and lines...almost took his hand off when he touched it.

 

yup. happened to a buddy of mine in his 48 ford. hoses were reversed.

 

I'll check them again tonight. It looked like they would only go on one way. They are a POS to get to with the front end sheet metal back on.

 

Don't check them, change them. You have been told what your problem is.

 

Yep, like they said, the hoses are reversed. I once did the same thing on a Ford with the external power cylinder. It sacred the **** out of me when I cranked it up to check for leaks.
