I need some ideas for basic pinstriping supplies and a starter kit of some sort for air brush work. My grand daughter is a good artist and has lately shown interest in adorning hot rods (hopefully due to my influence) and I'd like to get her some decent materials to start with. Be specific because I'm artistically challenged and don't sling the lingo. Thanks all.
There is probably hundreds of places and people to go to for this but you could start with excaliberart.com. Lot's of stuff in one place. Good luck.
Try this http://xcaliberart.com/pinstriping.html Harbor Freight has an inexpensive dual action air brush for beginners.
I've been looking at supply house sites like **** Blick, really confusing huge array of stuff. I really need some specific ideas. One person told me to start with 0, 00, and 000 Mack brushes with one-shot enamel, reducers, thinners etc. for pin striping, does that sound like a good place to start ?
As for striping supplies,I would get the following: 1)Mack 00 brush either series 10 or 20 1)gallon of odorless mineral spirits 1)each of the following 1-Shot colors in 1/4 or 1/2 pint size: White Black Blue(process or light) Red(bright) 1)pint of Wall Dog brand Brush oil 1)pkg.of 1 oz.plastic medicine cups(available at any drug store) 1)pkg.of Bounty paper towels 1)clipboard Plenty of glossy ad books that clutter up your mailbox daily(for palettes) A blank piece of metal(painted and preferably aluminum) A couple of Stabilo pencils(water soluble and able to be painted over) 1)copy of John Hannukaine's book on pinstriping and graphics A well ventilated, well lit area(NOT in the house!)for practice. The brushes, brush oil,and book are available at Mack Brush Co.or most good local art supply houses.Paint is available through a lot of body shop supply places(or art supply) as are Stabilo pencils.a clipboard is available through Staples or some other office supply store. Although the book is a great source of info,a little hands on with a local striper or sign artist would be a tremendous help. Also check the Yahoo message boards and SketchCult.com for info.Good luck!
Thanks mucho guys, looks like good advice and some good sites too, certainly enough to get started. This is a GREAT place.
