Hi. Building a 37 Ford Tudor. What I would like to know are a couple of questions on tachs. I need a tach to set my idle to near 1000 rpm. First. Can I install a small tach threw the firewall so that I can see it from under the hood??, and second.. What is good brand tachometer. Thanks..

Why not use a tach/dwell gauge, if you're just wanting to set the idle?

Will this dwell tach work with a HEI distributor??

The manufacture makes this comment "This analyzer tests conventional and electronic ignitions and starting/charging systems on domestic and import vehicles." The HEI distributor cap has a tac signal terminal and I have never had a problem using my 40 year old hand held tac on the system.

actron is good with there instructions , for a HEi you clip the one that is supposed to go to the negitive col teminal to the tach terminal ( make a jumper to make it easier to get at ) and the postive lead to the battery or positive power source

  7. I'd get a small tach. and mount it on the firewall. I did that with an oil pressure gauge and a water temp gauge on my roadster. It's nice to be able to see what's going on when you're under there. ( Although I did have a guy ask me once how I could see them when I'm driving. ) The tach. is a good idea, I never thought of that.

Another option is a timing light that displays rpms.

See now I like oldschool66's setup. Then I can check things out from under the hood.. Would the tach be harmed by the heat at all?? a roadster is open.. I have a closed hood.

I already have a Penske timing light. I have it timed right. I just want to install a small tachometer under the hood on the firewall. Can someone tell me a good name brand?? I was reading on google that Autometer, or Auto Gauge ( made by Autometer ) is good..

as long as you do not drive in the rain you should be ok as the backs are not sealed and they are not meant to see water , Autometer is a proven brand , stay away from there autogage line as thats the crap line they sell and the units are iffy on readings ( I would use a sun over autogage ) . autometer does sell a waterproof line but its bucks , its made for the dirt track guys who wash there cars down after the races and would be definately O/T as it looks modern .

Thanks. I'll look for some of them. I see Sun Pro all of the time, but hear they are crap as well.. I was on the Hot Rod site. They did a story about gauges. They basicly said that all gauges will work, but you can't be sure that they would have a accurate reading. Al
