just bought a 49 chevy pickup front axle to put in my gmc powered 31 chevy pickup. my question is when I look down at the axle its slightly curved back exactly the same on both sides. maybe an 1" or 1 1/2 " were they built that way or do I have a problem. It came from an undamaged frame but that doesn't really mean anything.

  2. ..those are factory bends; here's a pic of my 37 coupe axle, you can see those bends...

Also remember these axles were/are bent to align so being from an undamaged frame
does not mean the axle was untouched. Have a good heavy truck shop that does this
type of work check the alignment when you are done.

Mine has a slight bend or wave forward to it also. Sid dropped it for me. Mine is under a unfinished 29 Chevy roadster Okie Ute thing.

  7. .got thinkin about this.....I mite be wrong here, my 37 car axle is curved as shown above, here's a 47-53 AD truck axle; they were straight. Maybe yours is from a car.?
Do the bends look equal as on my 37 axle?

I have a 3" sids axle on my '51 and also still have the original stock axle. Both are straight.

I have a '54 pickup axle in my '29 and it is straight. The '37 - '39 car axles are curved but I'm not sure about the pickup.

Could it be that the I Beam got bent or twisted at some point in time? The I Beam on my 51 AD is straight and curves up at the ends.

Lots of changes were made to the AD trucks over the years. Rear cab mounts, fuel tank location, vent system, door handles, vent windows, etc. Before I got too excited about this, I would try to ascertain if the axles on the earlier models...say '47 through '49, for instance, may have had the curved axle which was superseded by the straight version.

I've owned a '49, a '51 , and now a '54 pickup. I acquired all of these trucks in their original state and everyone of them had a straight axle in them. There is not supposed to be any bend or curve in them except where they change elevation to accommodate the spindle assembly.

Cars, 37-40 anyway had the curve in middle, trucks were straight.
