TECH TIP Clean easy way to add trans/rear oil

Fooling with an MerCruser out drive lower unit, I discovered how oil is added. There is a hand pump that screws into the top of a quart bottle and a hose that goes to the lower unit. Oil does not spill out of the container like when you try to fill straight from it. You don't need a suction pump that leaks everywhere. You can put the hose in a fill hole on a trans or rear end and just pump away. The whole rig is about $5. I got mine at WalMart. I keep it in a zip lock bag so it stays clean.

I got one from Amazon when I had to fill the trans on my wife's OT Explorer. They are very handy. You can search for Plews/Edelmann 55001 1-Qt. Lubrimatic Fluid Pump. There are several brands.

I also keep my in a Ziploc bag as well. Really no other way to keep it clean and keep the mess contained.

I wonder if it would work with brake fluid. My master cylinder is under the seat in my model A and I am wondering how I am going to fill it without major spillage.

 

head down to the local feed store and get a large syringe and slide hose on the end. that and a mirror will get the job done.

Had one like the above photo for years, got at auto parts (almost any) store.

 

You can use a reverse bleeder setup like Phoenix to fill a master cylinder from a bleeder screw on a caliper. On my '40 Chevy I made an access plate in the floor and made the carpet with a fold back flap to expose the cover.

 

Here are a couple of pics of my rig. The plunger is upside down in the pic and the extension to get to the bottom of the jug is the white tube at the bottom. It was in the boat section at Walmart.

 

Sta Lube has sold those for the last 40 years or more. You an get them at Any auto parts store, or even Harbor Fright
