I'm planning to buy a vintage turn signal kit to clamp on the steering column of my 1935 Chrysler. It has 2 tailights and 2 parking lamps up front so I don't need to add any lights. How do I get the existing taillights to work for regular night time lamps, brake lamps, and turn signals? Do I simply change to a multi-filament bulb? I ***ume I need some type of flasher element to mount under the dash. Any suggestions on which one? It is a 6 volt susyem. Thanks
Some signal stats have the brake wiring integrated. Front and rear lights will need two filament bulbs and sockets.
Well it is not set up for 6V systems but it has a reference for turn signal, flasher, brakes and front marker lights if needed. The brake lights are the same used as the turn signal flashing. For the rear you would need a separate light for parking lights. It is solid state and doesn't matter if they are regular bulbs or LED. I think most turn signal controllers are set up that way. This one cancels on inertia and operates on a 2 position momentary switch. http://www.gasautosolutions.com/ Here is a version which self cancels with time but it is 12V too: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Hi-Tech-Turn-Signal-Module-Standard,2366.html
Look for a Signal Stat Model 800, vintage looking and it does not require you to change your fronts to dual element bulbs. Couple on Ebay right now.

I was looking at some made in the 40's. It looks like the newer ones use many wires. I was hoping for an older looking one. Are any simpler to set up? thanks for all the tips.
You can get dual filament replacement socket internals from any auto parts store. You remove the bulb from the factory housing, cut the brake/taillight wires, pull the "guts" out of the socket(there will be the br*** contact plate, spring and wiring, slide the new wiring, spring and dual contact plate in the socket and follow your wiring instructions for your desired switch. Easy peasy lemon squeezy
Not my design but I used it. You can use this for any turn signal switch even 6V if you find the correct relays Translation: cligno : signal AV : front AR : rear D : right G : left comodo : switch centrale cligno : flasher + apres contact : ignition + contact frein : brake switch And you keep your bulbs ...
Thanks Chrisp for the diagram. I planned on doing something similar on my Merc with using the headlights for the front signal lights. Figured it could be done with the use of relays but have not got to that stage for the wiring yet. Hooking up the relays for the headlights like you have the brake lights shown should work for me. Now I don't have to think so hard. Neal
The solid state boxes are not as hard as they look. Hook up power, switches and lights. No relays, no flasher's. They work with regular bulbs and LED's.
Here is the (slightly simpler) schematic I used. It uses only 2 relays & sockets, that were available at Radio Shack. Design courtesy of Hamber "******jack".
This is effectively simpler, I've never seen 8 prong relays before today. After a quick search I'm guessing they're 12v dpdt relays?
Here's a great site. I used their method to wire turn signals into my T Coupe using just a single pole, double throw toggle switch: http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/turn-signals.html If you want an indicator on the dash you'll need to use a double pole double throw switch and connect the two center pins together with power from the flasher than connect the two outside pins on the secondary side of the switch together and run a wire from there to your indicator. Works nice. I also thought about wiring it to flash one or the other headlights so I would have front signals as well. Since some of the new cars turn a headlight off when the signals go on I guess it would be OK with the cops but I'm not doing that part of it right away. I can show you how to do it if you're interested. To me a little toggle switch under the dash is neater than a clamp on turn signal switch although maybe not as traditional. My indicator is really brite so I won't be forgetting to turn the signals off even though I am getting pretty old!
Here are some diagrams that helped me some of these I got from http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/ under hot rod wiring
Thanks for all the tips and a big thanks to fellow HAMBer Bert for selling me a nice vintage turn signal setup. I'll need to post pics once I set it up. Fortunately my car already had a perfect set of parking lamps up front that can be used for the turn signals.
That's because you need to turn off the brake light when the signal is flashing. Gets a little more complicated than when you can use two separate bulbs for signals and brakes
hey, oldpl8s, I was wondering if your user name means you sell old plates?? if so I collect 1940 plates. I have 43 of 48 states & Wash DC. I am still looking for DC, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, & North Carolina. I try to stay under $75, condition not important as long as its not a total roach. ebay is usually a little too high for my blood, these guys must think the ones I am short are made of gold. Thanks,Steve
There have been some good posts with wiring diagrams. Basically you will need a dual filment bulb on the rear for taillights/brake lights, and the park lamps will work as a turnsignal all by itself. If you want to use it as a park lamp/turnsignal, you will have to change it to a dual filament bulb as well. Good luck with your project
