My buddy is just about done with his 35 Coupe Express. Of course Studebaker did not build a coupe express in 35 so he built one. It will be at the Counts Car Show in Rapid City March 7,8 and 9. Hope you enjoy.

    Just to be nitpicky accurate...

The 'first' factory built pickup truck from Studebaker was the 1937 J5 "Coupe Express".
There were a couple of prototype pickup trucks built before then, but they did not carry that name.

The "Coupe Express" was a breakthrough design, as it had an all steel body and bed.
There were approximately 3500 model J5 trucks built, with about 3,000 of them being the pickup truck version. The factory sold a lot of them as partial trucks, without a bed, but with rear fenders packed in a crate stapped to the back frame. That way a custom box builder could make something appropriate for the job at hand.
The J5 "Coupe Express" could be ordered in a RHD for export.
If the export RHD version was ordered, the spare tire was mounted in the LHS front fender.
(addendum: I like this truck a lot, and am not putting it down, nor anybody else.)

Gee, Jeff, I did say that Studebaker did NOT build a coupe express in 1935 so I'm not sure what you are being "nitpicky accurate" about. The builder calls it his coupe express and I think it is appropriate. Too bad Studebaker did not build them.

Wasn't pointing fingers at anyone...or putting down the truck.
Just trying to put some historical accuracy about the history of the 'Coupe Express' moniker.
I didn't even mention that Studebaker used that name on the first couple years of the M Series pickup.

I think the truck is great.
As a matter of fact, I'd like to find a '36 to grab the swing out windshield for my '37 (I don't have a cowl vent any more).

    5Brown1,
I love the truck. i have been dreaming of doing this for years. I was talking to my wife just last week about building something like this. I would love to talk to your friend and find out how he did it. This is what i love about old car guys. Finding a way to build something of their own. Great job.

  14. Mid-30s Studebakers were certainly well styled. There used to be a yard on the east edge of Mobridge, SD that had a 35 Stude 4dr. I thought about taking it home to build a limo, but then came up with a project closer to home.

I was unloading a bunch of Die Cast models I'm selling for a guy , and one was in there. Was the Truck a show car done by Studebaker, or, just a well known rod? The model is the same color. My picture is too big to load but it may be a common model anyway awesome truck!
