Is hopping up a MG TD off or on topic?

Way back - Flatties were popular in them, as they fit fairly well and didn't produce that kind of power that breaks Brit parts (if you're careful). I couldn't p*** up a chance to post a pic of my old TC I had in the 60s - right hand steering and all. This was a suicide ride if you were desiring to p*** anything. You had to pull WAY out to see around, and then that wimpy little fourbanger didn't have the oomph to get you out of trouble.

Docc, thanks. I've been to that place before...their focus seems to be on much later cars...mostly the British Leyland-era stuff. I am looking for a variety of different swaps...Flathead, Nailhead, 283, Y-block, etc. Not too interested in V8-60s though. And as far as bangers are concerned I was considering a 110 Offy for about a second but I am looking for streetability. A/B motors simply would not be period correct, given that they are 20 something years older than the TD...

  3. Allards looked nothing like a TD. It could have been a Jensen. The early cars looked like a big TD and had flatties in them. A guy in my HS had one years ago.

I didn't read ALL the posts. One Ardun V8 60 ended up in a TD in the Oregon area. That would definately be on topic. Yes?

hi, poking around the web, this string popped up. around 1970 i was a student and needed a car. a buddy had an mg-td with a busted block it was missing the transmission support. he bought a volvo b1800 motor from a junk yard and mounted it in the mg. then he went to viet nam. we agreed that if i put it together, i could have it till he returned and paid me for half the parts cost. so i spent summer evenings and weekends finishing the conversion... it was a *sweet* ride. i successfully raced (city streets and interstate highways) lots of other sports cars. they wondered how the mg could do what it did. the fellow returned, got the car back, his wife disliked it because he used to pickup chicks with it, so she had him store it in a barn in Salisbury, NC.. last i saw of the car... it was British racing green then. i wonder where it has been since then... cheers, cu, larryb

Hi. Back in late 1953 I got a used 1952 TD. Down hill with the wind behind me it would top out at 76 MPH. Later I had it bored 0.060 & added the MG Mark 1 cam & with the stock dual side draft (Lucas??) carbs & a split manifold with duals it would then top out at 105 MPH no matter what the wind. I could even sneak away from those 54 Mercury police specials the Sheriff Dept used back then, especially if I was on a road with a few curves.

If I am remembering correctly the Mark 1 was a slightly upgraded engine for the TD& the camshaft was equal to an aftermarket 3/4 grind. Been dang near too long to remember.

That was a great little car that would sure attract the gals but too dang small to do anything about that in it.

On the p***enger floorboard where your feet rested at the front there was a piee of wood that was carpeted over at something like a 45% angle. By removing the screw at the bottom of that angled board the way the carpet was attached at the top of the angle would allow that angled board to hinge up & I could store a fifth of whiskey & cigaretts out of sight. Worked great when gal friends parents came out to check out the car.
