I have a bone stock 1929 model a and was wondering what fluids I should use in the transmission and where where at on the transmission do I drain the old and put in the new? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The transmission wines really loud in 1st and 2nd gear. Enough to where you can't hear your p***ager next to me talking. Is that normal on these cars? I'm afraid I'm going to burn up the ****** if I drive it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Does not sound normal, I've had a couple that were fairly quiet in 1st and 2nd. fordbarn.com good place for stock A questions -- don't mention any mods to that car ha ha
I run a mix of STP® and gear oil (80wt) in mine. It may sound too thick, but it helps to slow down the unsynchronized gears for easier shifting. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Most early Ford transmissions and rear ends call for 90 wt. gear oil. .......................... Jack
Lol ok thanks. I didn't think it was normal but wasn't sure. This is my first model A Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Plug on bottom -fill to over flowing plug on side of trans. That trans has straight cut gears and they will make some noise. A Model A is about as smiple a car as there is. May I suggest getting a few books on the subject and doing some reading.
We have a stock 3 speed in our 36 Ford. I use regular 90 wt gear oil and added a can of STP and seems to work well. This is not an A ****** but I'm thinking you still shouldn't have excessive whine?
They use 600wt in it. No joke. It is like tar. You can get it from patrolium places or any restoration place has it. 90wt is too light.
140 is quite a bit lighter then 600...it may work. I used 600 in the trans, read and steering boxes of my A's and it worked well
600w is not 6 times as thick as 90w. They are measured on different scales. You can Google an equivalency scale that shows the relative viscosities of, say, 40w motor oil, 90w gear oil and that '600w'. Not as far apart as you would think.
I got a bottle of what was labeled 600w (just what exactly it is I don't know) from one of the Model A vendors, when I poured it in the trans it was the thickest goo I have ever seen but it seems to work well and my trans is quiet.
