I have the same problem with my '60 (which I can assume is the same heater core). I had the radiator guy look at mine and he said the control mechanism is history and that it'd cost way too much to try to fix it. "Find a new one," he said. "Yep, sure, just go to the Chevy store and buy a 54 year old "new" one. Riiii-iiight...!!!"

I know what you are talking about. I am planning on driving my wagon over to a friends house today or tomorrow and hopefully saturday morning we can diagnose the engine problem. While it is there we will rebleed the brakes and I will recheck trans oil and rearend dope. then we will order new seat belts.

40StudeDude I do not remember from your wagon build thread did you order new seat belts? If you did what length and style did you order? I am going to order 3 sets for the back seat and 2 sets for the front seat.

No, did not order them. I went to the upholstery supply place and bought seat belt material -they call it 'webbing' in the color I wanted, cut up old belts I had, did the measuring with those, then took latches I removed from them, the floor anchors and the new belt material to my upholsterer and had him sew the anchors and latches on. That way I got enuff belt webbing to go around Dan's substantial girth... and the belt doesn't cut into his stomach...!!!

Made some more progress yesterday. We got the motor running yesterday. We adjusted the the brakes yesterday.

We found some front end problems. I will pick up some shocks and tie rod ends and a idler arm tomorrow.

:eek:Hi Enloe.275.00 for a heater?Damn.Used to work for a friend with a radiator shop, and Harrison(R) had the cores to sell to rebuild heater cores for about $10.00 to$15.00 dealers cost, and the shop just put the old tanks on the new core.Total cost was the same as a new unit or LESS.If you have a OUALITY radiator shop close by check with them and see if they can order just the core not the complete unit. All that should be needed id the H-W-T of the stock core.
If it is a quality shop, they should have a catalog with all the info that is needed.
    Good luck.Have fun Be safe.

I wouldn't pay $275 for a heater core. See if you can get your original core repaired or recored.

I found a 60 tailgate today and I salvaged the guts out of it. Also got some bushings for the shifter levers on the column. The steering box also got rebuilt.

  25. I haven't checked your thread in a while, but I'm stoked to see the progress!! I just posted my project thread on my 59 Pontiac wagon that I hope to have going this summer. Would be cool to meet up at a show with all the wagons being built on the HAMB!
