I have a 1963 Mercury Meteor S33 w/260 V8 that i just purchased. The car is very original and I've decided (for now) to keep it original. It has a 2 speed auto transmission that is having problems. It won't shift to second until it's been warmed up and driven for about 8-10 miles. After it shifts it works prefect, continues to down shift and up shift with very strong shift, not soft or slipping. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Thanks, Mark
Change the fluid and put a new filter in it; that will generally clear up this problem... Because the 260 is a five-bolt block, that severely limits your auto trans options.
^What Crazy Steve said. I just got rid of the Ford-o-matic in my 61 Ranchero. I never had much for problems with mine however never much cared for only having two speeds.
That's a very common problem with this trams, I've owned 3 cars with the 2 speed fordomatic (one with a fresh rebuild) and they all acted up like that. I've learned to live with it. You can go c4 but you need the 5 bolt bellhousing and switch to a floor shift or get a detent adapter for the column Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I had a 61 Falcon back in 1974 with a two speed and it work great. I'm going to change the oil and filter hope for the best!
