I got 2 of these wheel discs from a picker today. Sure looks like the Lincoln logo. Looks like they were mounted to a wheel hub...but they are 21 inches in diameter. Anybody got a clue as to what they are? Thanks
I agree that looks like the Lincoln logo...not sure when that was adopted as such. However, I don't think those where ever 'wheel covers' , look more like some sort of production tool or pattern, not a decorative car part. That said, I have no further idea for what purpose.
Possibly a pattern... But I was thinking if it was why would it have 3 different bolt patterns on it... Maybe an older brake cover? Goes over drum brake to make it look fancy... Whats the diameter? Something kinda like this...
I can understand that concept...but two things seem not to support it...the 21" diameter coupled with the claim that it has been in agarage for many years. At that diameter, it would have to fit 'dubs'...which, so far as I know, are more recent creation than the age of these suggested in the OP. Oh well, another mystery likely to be explained by a knowledgeable HAMBER very shortly...
Sorry I either didnt read the 21 inch diameter or i forgot it as I was typing... An L series did have 23 inch wheels... But im just talking... Im looking for what this thing is everywhere... Come on some smart guy so I can not go crazy...
looks like the sides of a wire spool to me. maybe used rods, threaded on either end to tie them together ?
I don't think its three different bolt patterns, there all on the same radius from the center of the thing, just grouped in sets of three. Why would they drill all the extra holes if they all fit the same 5 bolt pattern? Maybe part of some sort of hanging lamp or something.
My guess is they are a paint stencil for applying the logo to alloy wheels or some kind of cover or trim locating off wheel studs ?
Shot in the dark here, but perhaps a part of a display or light fixture from a dealer? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Can I conjecture too? Let me give my disclaimer first, I am talking out my anus as I really have no idea as to the true nature of the item. Never the less, maybe just maybe it is a very old custom part like the spun wheel discs that Kevin Lee used to sell. When mounted to an old wire wheel it required a hub cap to seal the deal. Some of the old car especially the higher end cars had very tall wheels. The logo may have just been a decoration.
As a long time Lincoln/Mercury partsman I'm going on record as saying this is not a factory part. Not for the Blackwood (truck) or any of the cars. Ford produced a brake dust shield for 16 inch wheels but it was a black stamped steel piece with a couple of beads rolled into the face and only 5 mounting holes. Aftermarket entrepreneurs constantly snagged a Lincoln lookalike emblem for their junk. I'm not an "expert" but my work with Lincolns goes back to '78 and I spent a lot of time with customers who wanted to adapt "this" to "that", so there was a great deal of research spent on wild goose chases (and some success).
How far back was that emblem used by Lincoln, 50s? My guess is that if it has anything to do with Lincoln it is some kind of a manufacturing fixture used to make the logo. When they were done with it some old dude like me dragged it home because it might be good for something and he died before he found a use for it.
here is a logo to compare, does look very close to the same shape, just clearanced so the points don't touch anything.
I'd guess it is part of a dealership display of some sort if it has anything to do with Lincoln at all and nothing to do with wheels of any type.
