My 1958 Ford has threaded inserts that connect the upper control arms to the shafts on which they pivot. These inserts have no provision for lubrication no grease fittings and no holes into which grease fittings could be threaded. My car is creaking when the suspension moves, so I suspect the upper control arms need lubrication. My question is: can I unthread the threaded insert at each side of the upper control arm one end at a time without having to remove the whole upper control arm? This would allow me to put grease fittings into the ends of the threaded inserts to eliminate the problem.
We used to drill and tap them for grease fittings back in the day. If yours are original, it may pay to replace them and the shaft, which is available in a kit. I'm not sure if a retrofit kit is available for the full-size Fords. There is one for the Falcon/Comet that changes it over to the new press-in style bushings. Bob
I just replaced my upper bushings. Do you know the torque specs? My original 58 manual says 35 ft lbs. This seems really light. I know the old manuals had a lot of mistakes. I was reading on a 61 Ford- same bushings, and it was 150-160. Thanks for your time
