What Exactly am I looking at? (Inline Motor)

    Looks like a Buick eight to me. Weren't they called Fireballs?

    Yeah I have to say it looks like the Straight 8 in my Buick!

    Interesting... I just looked at this thread and the engine looks similar.

    Other than the intake and exhaust being on the opposite side.

    It is a 248 (not 243). The later 263 had stiffening ribs on the outside of the engine where you can see the outline of the cylinders in the casting, and they also had engine mount pads on the side of the block. The 248 in this picture is a front engine mount..

    Just found this from over 3 years ago. I believe that after 1938 Buick straight 8s only had 2 valve cover nuts. This leads me to believe that the motor from the picture is a pre 1939 Buick straight 8. I am guessing it is a 248ci.
