I've read most of the threads that have to do with building your own steering column for your rod, and I've asked for, and received, advice about adding turn signals. The consensus was to use the turn signal kit for the '54 Chevy pickup. I still don't understand how the turn signals cancel on this setup. Is there something that attaches to the back side of the steering wheel that protrudes into the switch assembly to make the switch self-cancelling? Or are these signals manual-cancelling only? Thanks in advance for any help from someone who's BTDT. I'm looking to build a custom column for my '52 International rod project.
There's a thingy that bolts to the back of the wheel, it has a tab on it, called a cancelling cam http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-truck-turn-signal-cancelling-cam-1954-1959.html just a round flat plate with a tab and a few holes in it.
I put one on a 55 pickup many years ago. Worked like a champ. 54 will have the cotton wrap wire. Switch is very much like a tri 5. If using a good used one for 12 v I wouldsolder on some new smaller wires. If still 6 v you'll need to replace with large wire.
