Here are some comparison pics. We shifted gears to get the roof on and get it enclosed. Weather has been fine but we decided to enclose first then tent and tarp for stucco. It is nice many days, 50-60 but it is getting too cold for teh stucco to cure unless its tented. The upstairs is HUGE900+ sq feet, room for a study and 3 bedrooms. This will eventually be guesthouse space. In the first pic you can see the 3 large windows to the west. In the second pic, you can see the double French doors that will open to a deck facing east. Coffee and a 75 mile vista with sunrise over the Badlands in the AM?
Yes bro, it keeps getting bigger! Nothing like an 8-12 roof 20 feet in the air! You should be here that weekend
Trent, I've been following you project from the start . I haven't chimed in, only observed. To say I'm impressed would be an understatement. The whole concept has fasinated me from the start because I've never been exposed to thins type of construction before. I've been showing the wife the pictures of your progress as she is really into construction. To my amazement she was very aware of the concept having watched a couple of building shows on TV that highlighted this construction. We will continue to follow your progress as you close in on the final steps. We have been planning to take a vacation to your part of the country for years. If it ever becomes a reality we'll be sure to stop and see your creation. Frank
Thanks Frank, your opinion and enthusiasm means a great deal to me! While this topic is sorta OT, I want to show guys that YOU CAN build your dream place on a budget! I havent talked costs much yet. The 5 acre lot was about 35K, the shop will come in around 30K. That 30 includes sitework and septic. We have over 1300 sq feet of living space to start out and 1500+ of shop spcae. Sure, I am doing EVERYTHING to save costs but the same house contracted out would be 175+. Sweat Equity, its the way HAMBers can play! I hope I can help other guys withtheir shops. Its funny, the stuff that costs the most, electrical and plumbing? THe materials cost pennies out of the total budget! Granted, I can do it as a homeowner here with the states blessing (and I have Pro mentors to help me in tight spots). Its all about doing it yourself, just ask Roothawg, he is my hero And Frank? You and your wife are welcome out here at any time.
Tman looks awsome need to get down there and see it in person, just to many irons in the fire!! Unbelievable.. Your house ain't nuthin compared to your neighborhood. Absolutely beautiful scene. I wouldn't know how to act with that much space. Great work!!

Trent muh bruddah, awesome shop in an amazing setting... i remember back in like, what... february or march of this year talkin about your plans on the phone when we were tryin to get Brett's HAMB relay set up... i had a pretty decent mental image of what you had in mind here for this place, but WOW nothing i imagined comes close... paint me green and call me martha cuz i think you an Carla's gonna be happy bro PS... Levis if your watchin, what happened to your T roadster? ? ?
Trent, my compliments on your project. A few years ago I attended a seminar on "Straw Buildings" and was amazed at the "R" (insulation) factor that could be achieved. About the same time my sister was planning on a new horse barn - she boards about 20 - and I convinced her that this - "straw building" - might be a good way to build the structure. Plus it would cost less. She did. (the straw was from her own fields) Her's is made of bales side by side, rather than end to end. Then stuco covered like yours. The part that "blows me away" is, even at -20 deg. she still has to vent the barn because the horses give off more than enough body heat to keep it warm inside. Without ANY heater! Then come summer, it's the coolest (temp!) building on the property!
That is some awesome information there Dave!!! Like others this is a great way to build - all you need is in the fields. Trent - how much are you going to charge for tours? You might need some chrome posts and red rope to line the path to the ticket booth. Do you have any concerns about cracks in the stucco from expansion & contraction?
[OK, I know it is OT but I was out there at lunch and snapped some shots. All lookingNW to SW from the hill behind my house. The little "knob" you see in the distance of pic 1 is Hearny Peak, 7242 fett elevation. Most of what you see is 3500 ft to 5000 feet up. 2nd pic is out of one of the upstairs windows. Last pic is one of the neighbors place, there is a large hill between us, cant see their place unless I am up there. Fiddy, wee kinda went overkill for the "guest house". We still have plans for a main house but I dunno? Cracks? Yes it can crack but we used a softer stucco with lime in it, last coat will be lime heavy since it flexes more. Digger, without it being ****oned up (no roof, no soffits etc), it was freezing outside today and inside was about 50 degrees.
We will try and put a run together next year, and make the journey up there to see you guys. Beautiful place. vagabonds cc missouri _________________________________________________________________________ Vagabond:"Wandering from place to place searching for that next "High Life".
