if I were to replace the hei in my car (sbc) with a stock points dist. what would a guy do to rebuild / modify it??

-pertronix?? (to get rid of points)
-aftermarket cap (are they any better?)
    -adjustable vacuum advance?
    -change weights / springs??
-bushings in the housing can be changed cant they?? is there a special tool to drive them out / replace them?? How much side to side slop is okay? How much up and down is okay (using shims between the gear and the housing??)

What else could / should I do?? I like the adjustability of the old mallory dual point I had and I like the no maintenance of my current hei - I want the best of both worlds in a stock points (originally) dist. Is this possible?? thanks-

you pretty much said it all yourself, go with a pertronix, the busihings in the dizzys never seem to wear out the bearing surface, but i'm never happy with the shaft end play, i always tighten it up a bit, don't know if it's really nevessary, but i've never hurt one! yup, and go with the centrifugal advance recurve kit too, you can stop there, or get real involved with tuning the dizzy, as far as adjustable vacuum advance, mechanical advance etc. but this sounds like a fairly mild motor, so i wouldn't sweat it too much.

If you go with Pertronix, get the later model that reads off the lobes. The earlier model had a kind of goofy ring that mounted on the underside of the upper weight plate. You could never get them flat and I had one that warped and caused world-famous backfires.
