I have a Ford 302 stroker drag race engine with solid lifters, roller rockers, Comp Cam 31-640-5, and World Products 5302 Heads. It is in a 1949 Ford 2 door sedan. It's WAY too extreme for me. How can i make this a streetable/drivable engine? Can i simply swap out the cam and lifters? or do i need to change springs and other components? If a simple cam swap will do the trick, which one would be good for a heavy car like mine---remember, i just want to go cruising---not racing. I would still like to have a great lumpy sounding idle though. Thanks, Dan
I'm using a CompCam 31-333-4 mechanical flat tappet in two engines built for the street ( I personally like mechanical lifters)....but call their tech line 1 800 999-0853 to build your confidence. Your springs are are certainly more than needed, but get their recommendation....they would probably suggest a hydraulic for cruising
Thanks guys. Hopefully the guys a comp cams can steer me in the right direction to make my ride enjoyable.
get a cam with .500" lift, around 230* duration makes a little rough idle and good torque for a 302 ford. use the springs in it to save money and time.
Comp cams will sell what ever easy for them. Have had nothing but problems with comp so I went to Howard cams out of Wisconsin! They are very good to deal with. Plus they will set you up with what you need and won sell you a bunch of bs.
Yeah, what's it stroked to?, what C/R? Can't really make comments w/o knowing the C/R on the engine. I'd say a good streetable engine is in the 9-9.5 C/R range with the gas we got today. Springs should be matched to the cam & the cam matched to the C/R.
