Starting my A model traditional style lakes modified project. I'm going to try and build what I can myself although I'lll leave the engine rebuild to someone that knows what they're doing. I bought the car as an unfinished project and I'm using it as a parts car as it had all the bits and bobs I needed to get started. It'll be running an 8BA [ getting rebuilt as we speak ] twin 43's, 48 brakes, open drive rear. Cleaning up the front crossmember Made a frame to brace the ch***is before I started chopping. Yes it's pretty basic and nothing flash but it seems to be doing the job. The first job was to pie cut for a 2" front sweep. I also cut the behind the front crossmember to bring the front back down. I'll make some 4mm plates and weld them on the inner rails to support the pie cuts. Here in Australia we need to have our cars inspected and engineered. It recently went through it's first inspection. The engineer was happy which made me happy! Then cut out some 4mm steel for the rear "Z" Welded, cleaned, polished and ready to weld in.
Suspension coming out Cleaning up rear crossmember Cutting out some front spring mounts for the front bones Fabbing some engine mounts. I wanted something different and something that looked original so I made some faux rivets by modifying some old bolts My engineer asked me to add in some gussets to the rear crossmember so i made these "traditional" looking [ I hope ] gussets
Instead of just welding a plate to box the ch***is I'm making a section that sits inside the frame rails so there's no exposed welds. I'm hoping this is what it might have looked like back in the day. I'm yet to add in my faux rivets after I've drilled 50mm holes in the boxing plates. I'll weld the angle to boxing plate from the back, then weld the angle to edge of the A model rails. Dummy fitting the engine is next. See you soon!
As mad as it sounds I didn't want to just weld boxing plate inside the rails and run an exposed weld. This method I will weld the boxing plate to the angle iron from the back then weld it all to the ch***is by seam welding the 2 edges. I did a quick drawing for you:
A man after my own heart! I don't know if I missed it but how much is that rear Z? The car sits perfect!
I'm liking it already. I applaud your efforts to add some detail into the small items like the rivets on the motor mounts and setting the boxing plates inboard of the edge for a more OEM look.

Tires coming off to paint the wires black. I'm going to try and swap the whitewalls for blacks. Machined crank ready to go for the 8BA Parts bin
