hey my name is john and i just got the coolest job i drive a restored 1964 divco delivery truck in new york city my dad drove a divco truck when he was like 14 years old in 1954 i used to drive a 63 gmc rack truck in the 80's it was cool cause you could do a lot of the work on the vehicle yourself i want to be able to maintain this divco the same way i want to learn as much about it as possible because it is such a cool and unique looking vehicle i love driving it I have one big question for anyone out there who might be able to help i am worried about one thing since it was rebuilt and set up again the clutch some times the truck goes into gear so smoothly and then it has these periods of seeming to not want to go into gear i am perplexed i have experienced bent clutch rods slipping clutches but nothing like this just when i feel like i should pull over and cause i dont want to get stuck in some bad place in new york city causing a major traffic jam the truck goes into gear nice and easy again i am not sure whats up?
i spoke yesterday with the person who was responcible for the rebuild on the divco and they told me that the clutch and gears were just going to be hard to work with because it is an olser vehicle and i took him as speaking the truth and then today as i was trying to drive the truck down delancy street having just gotten across the williams burg bridge in early morning traffic the clutch stopped working more or less and in order to keep the vehicle moving (to get it safely back to the space i keep it at) i had to stop and start the vehicle everytime i had to stop. a mechanic is looking at it tomorrow i am hoping it is not something that is hard to fix i love driving thuck it is the perfect size speed and gear ratio for driving in manhattan they only modern thing i asked for to be put into it was a back up warning beeper i love the fsct that it still has to be separately manually applied. i love the fact that it gives so many people so much joy in nyc where everybody is cranky in closing if anyone out there knows someone who works with divcos in the brooklyn manhattan area i would love to meet them and get advice on how to work on and mainttain this vehicle
i will do so the truck is so cool my sister lives coer de laiane(hope i spelled that right) and writes for the paper idaho is an awesome state
How did you make out with your truck in the garage? Is it a combination sit or stand drive setup? I have some experience with DIVCO's. If it is a combination sit or stand drive, the linkage sometimes gets worn and sloppy. If you hesitate while shifting, sometimes it will not want to go into gear. If you shift without hesitating, I find that it will shift better. The linkage may need adjusting or replacing. If it is a worn linkage problem, I probably have linkage parts.
