Hi All i need some advise on what gearbox would be best to use behind a small block chevy motor it's a 383 cid stroker 420 HP it's to go in the Buick that we are rebuilding also what axle ratio ? info would be good we are thinking of buying the engine from summit but any other suggestion's would be most welcome ( Bobby
You don't mention what year and model Buick, but I ran a 700r4 with a 9" 4.11 with Auburn unit behind my last 383 cu in sbc stroker (440hp). That was in a 31 A coupe with full fenders, and it worked perfectly.
I have a 700R4 and 3.50 Detroit Locker with a 28" tire in my OT ride with close to 400 hp and it works great.
I have a Saginaw 4 speed in mine with a small horsepower V8. With your engine you should consider a Muncie 4 speed transmission. Ratio for the final drive revolves around tire size and what kind of rpm you'll want at highway speeds a**** other things. The Muncie comes with different ratios (wide and close). If you're more drag race oriented prolly a 4:11 gear in the rear. Many options there.
