Hi all. I am trying to install a Nos 50s Sparton signal switch (7 wires) in my 51 Plymouth that originally did not and currently does not have.turn signals.......except for me jamming my left arm out the window using hand signals....that most people do not seem to recognize. My set up did not come w instructions so I am trying to figure out how to install the Spartan switch. I have run into a stopping point and am seeking some clarity on how these signal switches are supposed to interact w the brake light switch and the rear signals (and or brake lights?) Background info....I have used my volt meter to figure out how the switch works I believe. I have a factory Plymouth service manual. I have looked at several diagrams on google...still stumped w brake light switch wire to signal switch and to rear lights. Hence the following questions.... 1. Brake switch...What side of the brake light switch does the signal switch connect? And why? Also am I supposed to cut any original wires and leave them disconnected. If so is this what "taped" means in my car manual wiring diagram. 2. Turn signal power supply.... Is there one or two power supplies to signal system? Seems primary power comes from horn relay through fused flasher to turn signal switch....makes sense. But in some wiring diagrams the turn signal switch seems to send or receive power from brake switch....... cant make sense of this. 3. How does the green light on the signal switch supposed to work. Always lit when key and no blinking. Or just blink w flasher. Or always lit and blinks......? (I don't have any experience with these...) 4. When all is said and done....at night....should the rear blinkers and brake lights work at same time? This would mean that parking lights wont work at night in rear if turn signal is on at same time brake is depressed? I know these questions seem basic but if I understand how this system should work and why I feel I will better able to wire it properly and diagnose it if it fails thereafter. Thanks for any info to help me blow past this stumped point. Mike. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
1.The turn signal switch needs to be connected to the switched side of the brakelight switch, the side that went to the brakelights originally. That wire at the taillights needs to be disconnected and separated right from left. Your right and left rear wires from the turn signal switch will now connect to the original brakelight wires at the taillights. I'm also assuming 51 did not have the brakelight in the middle of the trunk? 2.Actually only one "power" supply wire from your power source through the flasher to the turn signal switch. The brake light wire is only "hot" when the brakes are applied and your brakelights are now fed/controlled through the turn signal switch. 3. Indicator light is the only wire hooked to the P terminal of the 3 prong flasher. It only lights when signals are on. 4.Brake lights and turn signals will now be controlled by the turn signal switch, if right turn is on left brakelight will still work, etc. If parklights are on they will stay on but brake/turns when on will be brighter than parklights. Hope this helps hopefully I haven't confused you more.
Hi 24riverview. Thank you for your clarifications. Fyi 51 plymouths do not have the center mounted brake light on the trunk handle rather they have brake and park lights in fender mounted tail lights. I will take a second look at the wiring diagrams while trying to digest your reply. Thanks again for taking a stab at helping me get through my first turn install. Have a good day Mike Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
As 24riverview outlined. You will have 2 wires to each taillight 1 for taillights 1 for brake and turn
This question has been answered before complete with wiring diagram. A search should turn up the answer.
