I just bought this car off epay. I am picking it up this weekend. I am wondering if anyone ever chopped a oval window like this before? I would go about 4" but I have been sitting here trying to figure out what to do with that back window. When I chop the 4" out it will look like at eye. I could use some conduit pipe and reshape the curves on the sides. I would like it to look oval when I am finished just smaller. What ideas do you have?

I'd invest in some cardboard and make a pattern of what would look good, then cut out the whole window panel area before the chop. Resize the window and reinstall.:)

if you want to keep the stock sheetmetal and modifiy it, what you'll want to do is cut out the entire window, then remove sections from roughly the 1 to 2 oclock position, 4-5, 7-8, and 10-11. follow?basically remove material from the straightest parts of the oval. it will narrow it more than reduce height though, so some saw cuts part way through the end radius to squish it down a bit would do the trick.

I want to say Street Rodder had an article on doing this very thing. Had to have been in an issue from at least three or four years ago - I know I haven't picked an issue up in at least that amount of time.

Just a thought, you might leave the window stock but lower the top by making your cuts above and/or below the window???

  6. Are you sure thats a 20's pontiac. It looks an awful like a 31 plymouth. I've got one in about the same condition.

If it was me, I would try going to a picture frame store to see if I could find a metal oval picture frame that was the right size and look, and weld that in place of the original window after the chop is done. That way you could easily get a matching picture frame for the inside if you ever finished the upholstery on it.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. The car is actually a 1929 oakland. I think they switched to pontiac in 1930. The front bumper is split 2 piece on the oakland. It looks like 31 plymouth had a one piece front bumper. There is a few picks on carnut. I have not picked the car up yet. Thanks
