Technical 50 chevy steering wheel on late model column

I have a 50 chevy styleline steering wheel I'd like to adapt to a 85 GM column. I've confirmed that the splines are the same, but understand there's some milling to do on the back of the wheel. Anyone care to share any experience? I'd hate to kill this sweet old wheel if it's not going to interface well. The column is harder to change.
